Best RPG for Wii/Gamecube/VC?

I'm looking for a really good RPG on the wii or gamecube. Or even to buy on the VC. I'm not looking for any kind of action/RPG like zelda. I never owned a SNES or a Gamecube so anything available is game. I'm looking for something of FF3/Chrono Trigger quality.

What should I get.

Are the Paper Mario games out of the consideration, because they have some platforming elements in addition to the normal turn based RPG format?

I'm really looking for a traditional JRPG type game. Not dissing the paper mario games (currenlty 1/2 through the wii one). I just have a craving for a good RPG game.

get Mario RPG from the VC

Super Mario RPG was fantastique, one of my all time favorite games.

For GC there aren't a ton of options, I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia a good bit, although it's a bit Japanese-cartooney, but the live action combat was new and different.

Note that Super Paper Mario is quite a bit different from the previous games. SMRPG, PM, and PM:TTYD are all much more RPG-like.

Some possibilities:
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (just beat this, it's excellent!)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Baten Kaitos
Baten Kaitos Origins
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon
Opoona
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Ogre Battle (VC)
Breath of Fire II (VC)
Secret of Mana (VC)
Paper Mario (VC)
Super Mario RPG (VC)
Phantasy Star II-IV (VC)
Shining Force I-II (VC)
Shining in the Darkness (VC)
Y's I&II (VC)

I would really just like to see some square games up on VC - chrono trigger, FF2, FF3, FF4...

How is secret of mana? or is that more of an action rpg?

/hands erwos a basket of delicious kittens.

Thank you sir 🙂

Just to be sure you see this: Note that Super Paper Mario is quite a bit different from the previous games. SMRPG, PM, and PM:TTYD are all much more RPG-like.

Secret of Mana is somewhat action-oriented, but probably not to the degree that your reflexes make that much of a difference. It's a classic that you absolutely need to play.

do you think shining force CD will make it to the VC? I've played an beat 1 and 2 and loved them. I never played the sega CD one though.

I haven't played any of the Wii Fire Emblem games, but at least on the GBA/DS, those games were more of the hybrid fantasy TBS style. (Sort of similar to Heroes of Might and Magic, but with more emphasis on unique characters).

I think the comparison is HoMM is misleading - the games don't really play like that at all. The Fire Emblem games are traditional strategy RPGs, and they definitely have significant RPG elements.

As for SFCD, no idea. It strikes me as doubtful, given that Sega has never released it in any game compilations, and because there's no Sega CD support on VC (yet?). I'd definitely love to see the rest of the games re-released, but we may need to wait for the Wii2...

I will award an additional basket of kittens (even more so delicious) if you can prioritize those into a list of order of best to worst. The only onces I've played are Shining Force 1 and 2.

Well, much as I like kittens, my personal tastes don't jive very well with everyone else's - such is the lot of the SRPG fan, I guess. So, hell, here we go:

1. Secret of Mana
2. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
3. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (bitch-hard!)
4. Breath of Fire II
5. Tales of Symphonia
6. Baten Kaitos
7. Ogre Battle
8. PM:TTYD
9. SMRPG (controversial, I know!)
10. Paper Mario

I own and/or have played pretty much everything on the list, so, excepting Opoona, I'd say it's mostly good stuff.

Bought Secret of Mana last night. Really fun game, gonna sink some major into it this weekend. Can anyone explain the whole stance thing? far, near, attack, defense... as well as the weapon level select. Should I always use the strongest I have?

I left that out by accident. Excellent game if you can find it, but that's a pretty big "if" at this point.

With regards to SoM, I vaguely recall a couple times using a not-highest-level weapon was helpful, but you'll usually want to be rocking the best you've got.

I really enjoyed Secret of Mana. Shining in the Darkness is another good one, but may be difficult to get into now. Phantasy Star IV is an excellent classic console JRPG.

The awesome thing about Secret of Mana is that it's quite a complex stat-based RPG if you want it to be... (at least for the SNES era) but can be played just fine by those who really don't care about leveling characters and striving to be the best you can... the game just might get a little bit more challenging by paying no attention to stats.

The stance is pretty much only for your CPU controlled characters... it tells them how to behave so you don't have constantly tell them what to do to keep them out of harm's way. At the beginning while they are quite weak you'll want them far/defense, and as you progress through the game and their defense/evade goes up you can gradually move it over to near/attack.

The weapon level + your attack stats determine the amount of damage done by certain weapons. Early in the game most every enemy can be hit by most every weapon, but as you progress through the game some enemies are quite good at evading certain weapons. You'll want to spend time with ALL the weapons, and if you are in to the grinding thing, level all of your weapons up to their highest. (Each orb allows a weapon to go up one more level) If you use only one or two weapons then those weapons will almost always stay maxed out while other weapons are weak and useless by the end of the game. When you get magic you will have to do the same with your magic. Failure to keep your levels up will only make the game harder... and some boss battles will take ridiculous amounts of time because the damage from spells will be minimal.
To summarize: The higher your weapon and magic levels go, the better the damage (or healing/longevity of spells, in case of magic.)

Do I need to level up the NPC's weapon/magic skills. Or should I just let them roll with their starting weapon?

Yes you do. They're not exactly "NPCs," you can switch between playing the boy, girl, and sprite by pressing the start button. It may be diff on the VC, but I don't know. BTW, you can play with 2 or even 3 people if you have the supermultitap device that let you have up to 5 controllers on the SNES, but it may be limited to only 2 simultaneous players on the VC.

The weapons used doesn't matter that much aside from "types of monsters" being good at avoiding certain weapons, except that in the end, you're going to want the boy with a high level of sword. I dunno if that's a spoiler alert, but I don't think it matters.

I usually just equipped one of each char with a main ranged weapon and a main melee weapon and had them level whatever else they could later, so they'd have about half maxed out. Some characters might have native bonuses or be more effective with some weapons, but gamefaqs guides should be able to confirm or deny this. I didn't know about gamefaqs.com when I was 11. Of course, if you keep everything maxed out, everything will be a lot easier.

The one monotonous thing about the game is that you are going to need to level all magic skills for effectiveness :[ Keep casting spells to level them, and then sleep at an inn :[ It starts to suck a little later on as you get more and more types to level.

Secret of Mana is my ***favorite console game of all time*** and I'm really really glad you chose it 😀

wow, I really didnt know about switching between the characters. That's pretty cool. I just got magic for the girl and the sprite so Im excited to try it out. It seems like I have a ton of weapons right now, so I think ill just grind away some levels with all of them this weekend. this game definitely seems well made.

Yeah man, I was like WTF "NPCs" 😛

Part of the love of that game was playing with 2 ppl at the same time. I've been trying to convnince my gf to play with me on wii VC, but she'll have none of it.

BTW, are you using classic controllers or can gamecube controllers work ok?

Also, a monotonous but efficient way to level the sprites magic is to cast self buffs and then rest in an inn for MP, rinse, repeat.
