my answer is Earthbound for SNES..haven't played one that's beaten it...Ogre Battle 64 is pretty damn close though..
 
Probably Xenogears.

FF6, FF7, and Chrono Trigger tie for second place.

I'm playing FF7 on PSP now. I'm so pissed that a bunch of Square PSX RPGs got released on PSP in Japan but not in the US.

I also really liked Saga Frontier II. I seem to be alone in this.

What's the deal with CRPGs anyway? Is it just me or did they forget how to make good ones with compelling stories after the PSX? FF8 lacked a soul and FF9 was pathetic. I stopped playing new FFs after that. Actually, I tried XII but it quickly bored me.

On the other hand, Disgaea was fantastic. But it's not quite an RPG.

Did good CRPGs die in the 90s?

I never got to play Xenogears or Chrono Trigger. I'm surprised there aren't alot more people saying FF7, seems like everyone loved it (I thought it was one of the most overhyped games ever...behind Halo).

If we're talking about traditional JRPG's then I'd say Tales of Symphonia (since I got tired of turned based RPGs). Thought the story isn't as good as alot of the FF games, thanks to the live-action combat it was alot more fun for me to play.

If we're talking about all RPGs the hands down winner is Diablo 2.

i guess i dont understand the love for earthbound. just seemed normal nothing special.

started to play chrono trigger. played for like 20 minutes and stopped.

Someone else said Baldur's Gate so I assumed PC RPGs were fair game. This is the console gaming forum, but there isn't a "PC & Console Game" forum for questions that could apply to both.

Earthbound is such a crappy game. I can't believe that it would be your favorite RPG, unless you can't separate nostalgia from actual quality.

lol that might be a big part of it...it was a huge part of my childhood but everytime i play it i smile...can't help it..it was AWESOME!!

Chrono Trigger was also amazing along with Knights of the Republic
