Best Router ?

I want something off the shelf that has very good functionality, also something I can hack, flash to new (Custom) firmware and play around with alot.

I heard something about a really awsome Linksys router that was based on some Linux kernel, TCP/IP stack or something or other.

Just asking what you guys think is the best router out there.

Wired or wireless, but I prefer the later.

I would say a low end DLink or Linksys because they don't filter Port 113. Those would be among the easiest to pentrate.

I'm thinking hack as in customize from my end for my use. Not hack as in break into. 🙂

It is not the best but if you need hack able you do not have another choice.

The Linksys WRT54 and 54GS are the only one that are hack able.

build AKA a machine with multiple NIC's. Most folks run *nix on these. Smoothwall is a distro geared this, way, but any distro with IPTables/IPChains can do it. I have Gentoo, redhat, and debian firwall/router machines.

The OpenBSD site actually has some good docs. You'd have to use the best OS and firewall software out there though. 😛

At this time it might be a very good idea to log to Linksys.com and read the Data Sheets of both products.

Im thinking about building one with BSD now . . .

But im not sure how to add a wireless component to a box I build.

Cisco 2611 or 2621. Check out the forums at broadbandreports.com, there's soooo much you can do with QoS and access lists. I belive Cisco now has some smaller/cheaper/faster models made moreso for the hobbyist, but I don't know the details right now. Beware of the Linksys/Cisco models, those having nothing to do with Cisco or Cisco IOS internetworking operating system.

Some wireless chipsets can be used as a wireless access point under BSD. Check the man pages (ral is supposed to be good).

They're both wireless. But it's the WRT54G and WRT54GS. The GS has the 108 mb wireless when used with other linksys GS cards. That's the only difference. Just download a modded firmware and flash it.
