I would like to buy an inexpensive router to set up a 2 computer network for internet sharing and LAN gaming. Which product is best?

I would suggest the linksys 4 port switch\router which can be found at this link-- linksys I found router very easy to set up and have not had any problems with it at all. For the price it is a good buy

One year ago it was an easy question to answer.

Today there is so many of them around that there is no real answer.

If you do not have any special needs then any one will do. Take a look at the current sale offering at your locale Mega stores and get the most inexpensive you can.

The most prevalent difficulties encouterd by people are related to port opening to allow special applications through the Firewall. If this is a concern of yours you have to look carefull at the targeted to buy Router?s specs.

Last month there was a good D-Link Router for $20. This month I did not located yet such a deal on Wired Router.

If you want to try Wireless there is a good deal here:

El Cheappo Wireless of the Month:

Barricade Turbo 11/22 Mbps Auto Sensing Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband ( $49 after rebate)

I have to agree with Jack on this. There are alot of decent routers/switches out there as long as you don't require some really specialized app. Though Jacks deal is decent you should check out the Hot Deals section on another thread at this forum. Just last week I picked up this same router and a pcmcia wireless NIC for $59 after rebate and there a lot of routers going for around $25 after rebates. If you want to read some reviews from a pretty unbiased and popular web site check this site out.

Personally for home or small office I would choose SMC, D-Link and Linksys products. I have worked with alot of different routers and hardware and these three vendors three seem to build pretty decent products. My first choice would be SMC since they have a lifetime warranty on there products and are fairly easy to get thru on the telephone for tech support. My next choice would be D-Link, only a year warranty on there routers and again fairly easy access to telephone tech support. Linksys has only a 1yr warranty on there routers and sometime you can not get thru to tech support and you end up having to wait for a call back the next day. Tech support and being able to easily RMA products are a must for me since I work in the IT field. Everyone elses tech suport that I have dealt with on low end products seems to be spotty at best. I guess it just a matter of you get what you pay for.

I hope this helped.Good Luck.
