Nirvana. KC was a really deep writer, which was probably why he offed himself. Feeling too much can have its good and its bad results. I am not saying killing himself was the right decision, but obviously at the time he felt there was no other option. Sad really. Nirvana was definitely MY most influential band. EVER!!! They influenced much of what music is today, like it or not. For those who say they sucked live, I say musically they were never really too intricate, studio or otherwise. They never claimed to be. They knew they were sloppy and they really didn't care. I think Kurt may have cared and wished to be a better guitarist, but singing and playing at the same time is a tough proposition and I think they did it pretty well.

BTW, I did see them live and thought they were damned good, and sounded very close to their studio recordings, which were not overproduced like much of music today, which makes many people think other bands were better musically when in reality they were just more polished in the studio.

Last 20 years? That really limits it.

If Monster Magnet would play the way they did on PowerTrip they would get my vote. A good second choice would be Atomic Bitchwax (guitar player from MM).

Five Horse Johnson is pretty good.

Gawd, this speaks volumes about the "quality" of rock music (and music in general), over the last twenty years.

G&R it's not even close. They filled 150,000+ seat stadiums anytime they wanted all by themselves which has'nt been repeated. And the only other bands I know that could do that were Beatles and Zeppelin. I like Motley Crue personally for last 20. I like drug using, guitar smashing, Heavy drinking, womanizing, arrested rockers who feel like they own the world not these pussy preteders like linkin park or the rest of the 90's crowd.

GNR started more than 20 yrs ago. I personally like Oasis but then again its like choosing who your favorite child is. Too many good bands to declare just one. I can say for sure that any bands that started on or after 2000 should NOT even be mentioned.

Pure Rock...

Rage is up there.
Tool is Awesome..
But if Radiohead falls in any kind of rock category..it gets the prize.

That standard would make AOL the best IP, McDonalds the best food, and Walmart the best store!

When I saw Nirvana play they were really bad, although I'm sure they had their moments in live shows that sounded tight...live play is one of the best ways to tell the real talent-level of a band because you can't hide mistakes behind a mixing board.
The best live band I ever saw was Frank Zappa (just amazing) and close runners up were
the original Allman Brothers who played better live then in the studio & Stevie Ray Vaughn about who I could say the same ..... I'm not saying there arn't any good bands these days, but "studio-bands" don't impress me.
