Best Rent-a-Car Company?

I will be taking a trip from Omaha, NE to MN and can't use my own vehicle for the first time. I need to find a decent priced medium sedan (Taurus sized preferred). I checked online and can't really find a quote anywhere unless I make a reservation and I want to look around before I commit. What is the best company out there to rent from in a price perspective without having to pay ridiculous fees for crossing state lines or mileage?

They're all pretty much the same based on my travels. In my area, Enterprise has the best deals and clean cars

just go for the low price
car is a car

check orbitz

alamo and budget are the cheapest airport to airport, kind of expensive, ~$70/day, must be the one way/drop off fee

I checked Enterprise (forgot about them in my original search) and got a quote of $140. That's less than I was expecting. I'll be leaving on the 20th and coming back into town on the night of the 23rd.

I rented a car from enterprise a few weeks ago for a trip from jersey city south to atlantic city, west to williamsport, north to buffalo and back again over the course of a 4-day weekend.

unlimited milage as long as I stayed within the general north mid-atlantic region and it was an overall pleasant experience. think it cost me like $300, but I also got the top end car they had on the lot.

I usually look on Orbitz to compare rates and book directly with the company (so you can cacel without penalty). Generally the Hertz, Avis and National will have newer cars, but I agree with going with the cheapest. Enterprise is a little slimy feeling and they tend to keep their cars a lot longer (I had a Neon in Dallas w/ 40k miles!)

Orbitz is a joke. I just checked them out and didn't see a quote below $260. I found a quote of $145 at the National web site.

do any companies allow you to pick up and drop off in different cities, without either location being an airport branch? i need to get from DC to Pittsburgh next week...

best suggestion I can give is, treat the person behind the counter nicer than your grandma and ask what kind of cars they have (in the class you reserved) and then ask if there are any free upgrades available.

Hell, bring them something nice...think about it, if someone did that to you at your job, wouldn't you totally comp them??

Do I have a story to tell. I ended up going with Hertz. My first stop was Enterprise and I had my car picked out and everything. I pull out the payment, my Visa check card and was told they could not accept that. They requested I either A) Use a major credit card or B) have a "co-signer" come in with a major credit card and they could assign me as a co-driver (more money). I have a major credit card BUT Enterprise told me they would take up to of $600 out for a deposit on top of my rental fees. Only person who could cover that was my Grandma and we called her. Guess what, she doesn't drive (over 80yo) so she couldn't be used as a driver on the contract which made her CC worthless. The next step was to have TWO utility bills that show a flawless record for 6 months. My mom could cover this and had a Visa check card but we would have to run home for her bills as they needed statements, not the bills that she had with her that day to mail in. Home being 20 minutes away this was not worth it. I found out they would also take out the $600 deposit out of my check card and I couldn't take that kind of hit with my vacation. At this point I was so mad we just left. Their web site doesn't say anything about not accepting check cards and even the counter witch said this and smiled as she said "Sorry, but we don't trust check cards, Visa or not. Sorry our web site doesn't state this."

I went to Hertz afterwards to check on what they could do. Prices are a little higher but I drove off the lot with a car in under 15 minutes after using my check card and only a $100 deposit. Counter guy was very nice and we even BS'd a little bit.
