Hey all,

What would be the best receiver for a pair of old Realistic Mach One speakers I am getting? I think those will be the only two speakers I run (though I might have a sub)

Thoughts?

thanks

A good cheap receiver is the $175 Pioneer 712 from etronics.com. Cnet has a positive review of last year's 711.

What kind of budget are you on? You can find OK new ones for $100, used ones for $10-100, great ones for $600-up.

You may laugh, but the original Mach One's with the sectoral midrange horn on the top were pretty good speakers for the money at the time. If you get them in good shape and the foam surrounds on the woofers aren't rotted out, good deal. They are efficient and will play loudly with a modest 30 wpc 8 ohm rated receiver. These speakers are about 20 years old if memory serves correct.

Actually, folks, those weren't bad speakers back in the day. They were regarded as having one of the best SQ/price quotients out there, and I wouldn't turn down a free pair myself. The foam surrounds might need repair though, but there are kits readily available.

You'll want something pretty powerful going into them to make them pound. Perhaps something like this :)

With 15" woofers and a 20 Hz frequency response, I doubt a subwoofer could make a great difference if you've got enough power to begin with.

EDIT: Perhaps I stand pre-corrected (I always get distracted while I compose replies, so I'm a little slow at times) on the power issue. I don't have any actual experience with these speakers, but I've heard all about them. Still, Harman/Kardon has great receivers, and I think the speakers are rated at 100 WPC continuous.
