the best realplayer alternative really is, in fact, Real Alternative.
(installs components needed and then use something like MPC for playback.)

No problemo. Your concerns are very real indeed, but free-codecs is pretty trustworthy.

(You should grab Quicktime Alternative while you're there.) :)

RealPlayer Alternative is the codec to play Real videos. The player you want is Media Player Classic. The latest version of RealPlayer Alternative (1.49)comes w/ the newest version of MPC. AFAIK, once you have MPC installed, you don't need to install another divx/xvid codec pack to play AVI files.
