the best realplayer alternative really is, in fact, Real Alternative.
(installs components needed and then use something like MPC for playback.)

I googled but don't recognize the names so I don't trust downloading them.

Sorta like Googling How to get rid of Spyware, the top 90 of them will be actual spyware installers.

RealPlayer Alternative is the codec to play Real videos. The player you want is Media Player Classic. The latest version of RealPlayer Alternative (1.49)comes w/ the newest version of MPC. AFAIK, once you have MPC installed, you don't need to install another divx/xvid codec pack to play AVI files.
