I use a DE razor. i just get trial packs that have a bunch of diffrent blades to try.
I see a lot of posts in this thread about DE razors. Is that a specific razor or just a generic term denoting double edge razors in general?

6 months? Do you even grow hair on your face? :D

I might have to try that. I've also been shopping around for different shaving products/techniques.
I have a pretty heavy full beard. I attribute it to two things:

1. The quality of the merchandise

2. The described technique of keeping the razor as dry as possible (i.e. dry after cleaning, then store dry).

I use the Fusion too, and I also hate the prices on the blades. They are a little cheaper at Sam Club or BJ's but not by much. I just wait until there is a deal that includes a few blades in the package with the razor, and just buy the whole kit.

The Fusion Power is essential as the vibrating handle does a nice job of clearing the hair out of the blades.
Is that what the Power does, vibrates? I always wondered what it was for.

I'm still using the Mach 3 which I've had for at least 5 years. The Mach 3 Power I killed after about 1.5 years (the handle housing the battery broke in half).

I seem to go through blades every 1.5-2 weeks.

Anything gillette. I hate how most other companies block the back almsot entirely sometimes making it impossible for me to clean the razors in any sort of efficient manner.

With my mache 3 I just rinse it, smash it into the sink a few times, and rinse again and it's perfectly clean. Other ones I have to freaken like scrape stuff out, rinse, smash, rinse from mutliple sides, scrap some more, rinse, smash, rinse, and it's still shitty, and I still have 5/6ths of my face left to shave!

I used the Mach 3 and the Fusion for awhile, but I went through cartridges too quickly with my heavy/thick hair, and they were awful on my skin. I now use a DE with feather blades and absolutely love it. Better shave, more cost effective, and I really enjoy shaving now.

Worth the price over a cheap (or free) DE?

Only if you feel you need to adjust the angle of the blade. I have the futur and love it. Some people dislike the process of changing the blade, or the lack of grip on the handle.

Ultimately, I only bought the futur because it was what was in stock at my local shaving/vacuum store (interesting combination, I know...but I do like to support local niche shops).

I bought some blades and called the number on the back asking about razors. They sent me a free one. Plastic handle, non-adjustable, to change the blade just unscrew the handle and put the blade between the two metal pieces. It works as intended, I just wasn't sure how it could be improved on. :p

the futur are the nicer DE's. you can pick up a good cheap gillette adjustable (i have 2) for cheap.

though the one i really like is a Gillette Gem jr which uses single blade razors. they are hard to find.

I don't know how I'd feel about a plastic handle. I can definitely say I like the solid feel, heft and balance of the futur.

Gillette Mach3 hasn't let me down. The Fusion range isn't sold here but I am curious now. I am so satisfied with the Mach3 that I'm not even sure how the Fusion would improve on it. A quick look on Amazon shows that the Fusion cartridges are on average 50% more expensive than Mach3. Should be worth a shot whenever they're available here.

I can get close without any cuts, so at this point in my life I can't see paying that much for one. Yeah, it's distributed for as long as you keep it, but it's hard to beat free. :D

But the Futur is just so damn sexy. Seriously, I've got a nice cherry-finished shaving bowl, decent looking brush and that Futur nicely arrayed next to my sink. Had a chick over, she had to use the bathroom and commented on it after she got out. I got to show off. Let's see your plastic-handled freebie pull that off. :)

Looks aside, the weight and balance of it is nice; and the adjustment is solid. I generally stay at settings 1-2 for the reduction passes and shift up to 4 or so for detail work/rough patches. This thing is heavy such that I can get a kickass shave with next to no pressure.

But you can get similar features on some cheaper (note cheaper != cheap) razors, so unless you find a deal you are paying a premium for the name-brand/looks of the Futur.

I primarily use a Merkur Hefty Classic. However, I do have two backup cartrige razors that I use when I don't have the time for a proper DE shave. Those would be the Gilette Sensor and Mach3. The sensor typically requires many passes to get my stubble, but doesn't really get too close. The mach3 is a bit better, but the blades are even more expensive. Sigh. I wouldn't mind switching to a blade razor, but until I master the DE without too much razorburn, I'll wait.

Can anyone recommend some DE blades that they like. I have a Merkur DE (long handled one, I think) and I haven't been blown away by the smoothness of the shave. I've tried some Merkur Super blades, Personna Super (made in U.S. not Israeli), some Walmart Personna Platinum Chrome, and some Wilkinson Sword cheapo's. None of them really wowed me.

I've read good things about Feathers, Derbys, and Israeli Personnas. Any personal experiences? I know everybody's face is different, so it ends up being a "preference call".

I love the feathers that I use. From my experience, though, the closeness of the shave often comes from preshave prep (properly exfoliating, softening hair/skin, etc.) and shave technique (do you do with the grain, against the grain, J-hooks, one pass per form or more, etc. etc.).

i've been using the same gilette mach 3 razor for like over a year now. not as comfortable as new blades, but it gets the job done. i'm not paying a bunch of money for shit that works just fine for me. it doesn't cut my face, doesn't cause me to have razor burn, doesn't hurt (unless i hadn't shaved for like 3+ days... then i need to make sure my face is soaked in the shower and has plenty of lubrication from my shower gel).

I always shave in the shower, so softening shouldn't be an issue. I go with the grain on my first pass and then re-lather and go against the grain PRN using relatively short, smooth strokes.

As for prep, I'm a little unusual. I have a cheap boar's hair brush and some cheap glycerin soap, but I prefer to use my own method. I shave at the end of a shower so my whiskers have had ample time to soak/soften. Then I apply a thin layer of baby oil and put a small amount of regular shaving cream over that. I know the baby oil sounds weird, but I tried a couple shaving oils (King of Shaves and some other one) and I liked the closeness that I got. I read somewhere online that you could use baby oil (or even olive oil!) and it's a lot cheaper, so I tried it and it works a lot better for me.

I may go for a DE sampler pack on eBay with some feathers and derbys in it to give them a try. I really haven't tried any quality blades yet.

Do you use the feathers that are in the yellow/red/black package (New ones?) or the feathers in the black/silver package?
