best / quiet 120mm fan for cpu cooling? on a ultima 90

Wait! You're going to plant a 120mm on Ultima-90? I didn't know that works.

Well I'd use the Scythe S-Flex SFF21F 1600RPM model on a heatsink.

SPCR hasn't reviewed the slipstream series, and when it comes to fans, you know it, SPCR is the only place to look :)

Scoop, the heatsink actually comes with clips to hold a 120mm fan. There are some reviews that actually tested the heatsink with a 120mm (with pictures). It's bigger than the heatsink but it still works just fine

And Doclife, thanks for the link. I'm actually going to go with a Noctua NF-S12-1200 instead after reading the review :)

Originally, I was going to tell you about the Noctua NF-S12-1200 but I wasn't sure if you're willing to pony up ~$20 for a heatsink fan. I guess, when it comes to peace and quiet, we're willing to pay for it. :)

Scythe S-Flex series is cheaper in the US than Noctua? Must be because of import costs or something. Other way around here :)

in my experience the 4$ yateloon d12sl-12 is the best fan especially when paired with a resistor. SVC.com sells them

I have a Yate Loon on my current cpu now - I'll see what it is when I get going with the build tomorrow

I have a Yate Loon on my current cpu now - I'll see what it is when I get going with the build tomorrow

The Yateloon D12SL-12 has been a very good fan for 3 years+. At 7V, it is very difficult to hear from 6" away. At 5V, and 1meter, forget about hearing it. Its great. While you do have to factor in the cost of the Zalman Fanmate, its worth it compared to the standard 20$ price of the Nexus fan that is identical except that it runs 200rpm slower at full voltage.

for 92mm fans, I have not found one that is as smooth or quiet as the Nexus. I had to pay the 12$ for those unfortunately...

Indeed.

I have a couple of the 92mm Nexus ones...ridiculously quiet!

Yate Loon are very good for the price, so nothing wrong with that.

All the YL in Canada have closed flanges/posts, so they don't work on the TR Ultra 120s/Ultima 90s, but apparently some stores in teh US have the open posted ones which work for being clipped on.

When I ordered my Yate Loon a couple of years back, I didn't realize the holes weren't there. I had to drill them in myself

I'll keep that in mind if I have issues with the 120mm fan + Ultima 90 in my case

heh yeah. Not sure if it's good enough though. My temps are not what I hoped. Not sure if it has to do with the thermal compound or the fan itself

I went with the 120mm S-Flex "E" on my Ultima 90. It's motherboard controlled and usually spins at 600 rpm. My CPU idle temps are around 35c and get up to 58c under full load.

FYI - the Noctua was a waste of money. I actually got 1C less on a 2yr old Nexus Yate Loon fan at lower RPM that cost me $4 at the time
