No pro here but I have seen lots of talk about the P4 1.6A. It will O/C to the 2.2 range or better.

You could do a AK31A and 1.4T-Bird for 182$ (includes S&H) from Newegg and have a very fast system which should do between 1.54 and 1.6ghz for certain. EDIT: I neglected that you may not have DDR already, in which case I'd recommend the K7S5A so you can use your SDRAM and a 1700+XP for $ 176.95 includes S&H to Texas

I believe he means 175$ to spend including a board.

Duron 1.0ghz are about $47 at newegg.com and most will do 1.33. Damn fine deal.

Peace,

Yeah the on-board sound on the K7S5A is marginal at best and requires powered speakers so just disable it in the bios and any other settings like com ports, on-board modem as well and pop in your SBlive. BTW, you can use DDR or SDRAM and it takes every XP made so your upgrade path is brighter that way as well.

If dapunisher is referring to o/c of the conventional 1.4 gig Tbird, just make sure that you have very good cooling... that chip consumes almost 80 watts of power, all by itself!!!! And that is before you o/c it at all.

Personally I would rather have an XP 1700 for $105 with an affordable cooler over the 1.4 tbird.

i don't plan on oc'ing, just want faster and stable, the xp 1600 or 1700 won't have a prob with my win98 1e will it? i'm really leaning toward the k7s5a + xp1700. i remember my k6-2 had a memory loop prob with win 98 1e. worked around it in dos, can i still do that or not? jer
