I found out a few years ago that I don't ever *need* a color printer. Hence, I spent some bucks (currently run about $160) for a Brother HL-1440 laser printer and have loved it.

Definitely go with a cheap laser, I've ran > 1100 pages through my samsung ml 1210 this year alone and would hate to think how many ink cartridges that would've taken. How often do you really print in color? There is rarely a reason to use anything but b&w for coursework, in the unlikely situation that you need something in color, just find someone in your building, or go to a school lab. The convenience of printing anything you want without worrying about how much ink you have left is well worth it, and if you factor in the cost of a years worth of ink, an economy laser should easily beat an inkjet in price. Finally, who doesn't love the feel of a warm, freshly printed peice of paper?

cheap laser
more reliable
cheaper per page
way better print quality on any type of paper
quiet
fast

color is rarely necessary. color is expensive. good color is really expensive and requires nice papers. easier to go to kinkos for rare occasion you need color. inkjets require nice super white super absorbant paper to look half decent for text. and even then the edges of the fonts will be fuzzy as the ink spreads a little.
inkjet is what you might think you need, but not really. good laser does the job you probably will need, and does it well.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 and so far it's been a great laser printer. They seem to run on special for between $79.99-$99.99 after rebates. Check the hot deals forum every now and then and you'll
probably find a good deal on one. 🙂

same for mine! $70 after rebate!

ahhhh too many choices.

Go with the psc1200, I don't trust laser printers for $79, they sound too cheap to be a good value. I'm talking from experience on this one, i bought 5 items for a cheap price, including a Palm Zire, and they all broke down.

Look at the Epson C84 It is $100 with a $20 rebate right now. Ink is cheap for it (aftermarket) and its print quality and speed is very good.

My grandmother has a OLD 800 series Epson still rocking out using aftermarket ink to this day.

ya aftermarket ink, but don't you think that regular manufactured ink is better quality?? That's why the psc1200 is way better. And besides, as far as I know that epson is a printer. The psc1200 is a pronter, scanner and copier, so you won't have to buy another machine if you need to scan documents.

get a laser printer, otherwise get a $30 inkjet, cuz when you're done with the ink you can just toss it and get a new printer (for less than the cost of replacing the cartridges)

i got a samsung SCX-4016. Laser printer with scanner. $230 shipped from newegg with a $70 MIR total price $160. excellent buy.

well cheap lasesrs tend to cheap out by giving you a half full starter toner cart. but thats about it really.

i like hp, cuz theres a decent market out there for replacement parts and repair kits🙂
