http://www.easynews.com

Best server hands down in terms of speed, retention, and completion.

Runners-up:

usenetserver
giganews

edit: In response to maetryx's post above, newsfeeds.com (PLURAL) is not bad but to find stuff you have to scour three or four of their individual servers, which can get annoying unless you have a good program to poll multiple servers.

I like easynews best because it also has a GREAT web interface so you can yank stuff without having to load headers.

I've been using Newsfeeds.com (was newsguy.com I believe before) for well over a year and a half. I've never had any problems with it--and I've had some technical issues involved with Agent and they helped me out! Great service, haven't looked elsewhere since. I pay $19.95/mo for 750mb/day per server.

astranews.com is what I use, the download speed is limited to something like 600kbps but its unlimited download for a month for 10 bucks. They also have different plans, with faster access etc. But I'm cheap. :)

Think you mean: http://www.news.astraweb.com/index.html

BTW: I like the 25 gigs for $10 deal, cause there isn't always something good in newsgroup, they don't even count headers as bandwidth used.

I use Newsfeeds.com as well. I rarely get to the limit on all the servers. I think there's about 12 on the $19.99 account. With a good newsreader, you don't have to worry about the multiple servers, it handles everything. And you get about 750megs/day on each of the 12 servers. Granted, some have mainly mp3s, adult, binaries, etc.. However, there's only been 1 or 2 times I had to wait a day to finish grabbing something (after getting about 2 gigs earlier in the day).

Oh yeah, Newsfeeds.com has no problem maxing out my 3 mb line.

That's per server. About 12 servers total.

Usenet Servers comparison

I use UseNetServer.com & Newsbin Pro 4.1.

Unlimited download (no GB limit/month), 6 connections, 10 day retention, 98% completion. All for $14.95/month or $ 36.95/3 months.

Downloaded 9GB files in a day, no additional cost. My 120Gb HDD was full in less than a month. Try that with other newsgroups and you'll have to pay extra when you go over their GB limit/month.

I tried usenetserver but didn't much care for it. It seemed very cyclic. For a few weeks, speed and retention would be great. Then, it would suck for awhile. Then, it would be on spot for awhile before going downhill again. This was at least 8 months ago, so maybe they are better now. At the time, they had completion problems as well. Much of what I was grabbing was not finished.

However, if it had been consistant, it would have been a good choice. The speed, when it was running good, was fast.

Newsfeeds has no monthly limit...just the daily. And I've done 2 or 3 gigs in day without any problems. Anything more than that and I get behind in burning it off my HD.

If usenetserver is running smoothly nowdays then I imagine it's pretty good. Wonder how many groups they have now? There were 4 or 5 groups I wanted long ago that they didn't carry. Yet another reason I moved away from them.

Actually, if you go to that link he gave you and click on "Group Lists" then you get a list of the groups (who would have thought?).

I used Usenetserver.com for a month. You can't beat the preformance. Especially when you have a fast connection. 6 Servers unlimited downloading @ 2Mpbs a piece. I would get anywhere from 500KBs-800KBs. I have no doubt that the fluctuation (sp?) was from my provider, though.

Astraweb is the best bang for your buck.

Easynews is good, but they'll rape you if you download a lot. Astraweb will give you unlimited downloads with much better speed and retention than Usenetserver. I've gone to download stuff that was ~7 days old and had no trouble.
