All the components are cheap, on prebuilts. I am assuming you aren't looking for an oem machine but an ibuypower or cyberpower type machine. You want a strong cpu but have all of the rest of the components garbage? Doesn't seem to be a wise way to spend money.

Haswell i5-4570 SFF pre-built OEM refurb PC, 8GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Windows 10 Home, $110:

GTX 1650 low-profile $160:

Patriot 16GB kit of DDR3-1600 $65:

Note that the RAM evidently, is on tomorrow's ShellShocker list, so it could go cheaper tomorrow.

I actually just bought these three things, with my stimulus check. Gonna build some $350 gaming PCs, and try to flip them for $450-500. (Will add 480GB SATA SSD as well, which I already have.)

16GB DDR3, GTX 1650, i5-4570, should be decent for gaming, if not as great as a lower-end Ryzen rig with an RX 580. (Which will run you around $600-700 for parts, "new".)

I wouldn't advise that policy.

Better to get a forward looking motherboard and a CPU that gives best price/performance. Then in 2 years, upgrade the CPU to take advantage of improvements.

Furthermore, if you are doing anything that is CPU intensive, then by its nature it will require long runtimes at 100% load. Which means your power circuitry also needs to be up to it. Motherboard traces, VRMs etc, your CPU cooler and your PSU then also play important parts.

buy a refurb machine and then purchase a new power supply and a graphics card

The i5's are about $200 , i7's start at $300, with licence, ram, hd etc

Should i just build my first pc? I'm kinda intimidated by the idea. Have always acquired pre built machines

How do i know which motherboard fits in a case that i get?

Most user built motherboards are ATX. The case you buy, and the motherboard specify what type they are or support. Use the guide for building, showing budget, and answering other questions, in a new thread. Steps:
1) Reasearch
2) make thread with answers to the build guide
3) based on research and replies to the build, propose or approve a parts list.
4) tweak as required.
5) ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT ANYTHING THAT YOU ARE NOT POSITIVE ABOUT ! This is crucial for success.

The questions are here:
