Best place to rent a car?

Planning a trip to Tennessee, driving from Florida. Mileage is going to be about 800ish miles each way + while we're up there.

I've done some preliminary searches and it looks like we're talking about $600 or so for a 10 day trip... seems like a lot of money just to rent a car. I almost would think about buying a new car and use that money as a down payment on the car (we've been looking at purchasing a car within a year or so), but not sure if it would be good to put that many miles on the car.

Who has the best prices/deals on car rentals?

We're looking for:

1. Mid-size car (just the two of us, but need room for suitcases and all her shoes 😉 )
2. Unlimited mileage since we're driving quite a bit and far. I think I read on a couple car rentals that theirs is unlimited unless you drive out of state? Doesn't make sense.
3. Fuel economy is a plus since gas prices keep going up, but it's our anniversary so I could splurge on a little nicer car and pay the extra fuel costs.

Also, I do have a BJs membership card which looks like they may have car rental deals, but that's it... we don't have AAA or anything.

Thanks!

Beware all the fees. They are more significant than many people realize. Ask for a breakdown of the price with fees before you choose one vendor. My personal choice is Enterprise after having tried Enterprise, Hertz and Budget.

Almost feel like it'd be better just to purchase a car... our current car is on it's last leg and we were planning on getting a new car in a year or so. But then we'd be putting a lot of miles on a brand new car.

DO NOT pick up your rental from an airport location because there'll be a lot of fees. Also, the mileage structure you mentioned doesn't make sense to you, but it sure does to the rental companies. 😉 I'm not aware of any car rental companies that allow unlimited mileage if you go beyond the neighboring states, or if it's a one-way rental.

You should just fly to TN--It it a special occasion after all 🙂
