I have a dead motherboard from a gateway, and the offending Bestec power supply that did the job. I will probably be throwing away the gateway pc case and parting the CPU ram and drives though. I think this garbage needs to be in another place other than the trash can though. My work also stopped accepting this type of trash too.

Is there another place where i can take these components?

Call your waste company. They usually have special locations to drop it off. If the city picks up your trash call their Sanitation Department.

I've heard of events that some cities hold where they will take your old technology and dispose of it for free.

Some states/municipalities are more progressive with disposing of "e-scrap" than others. Because you are on the eastern seaboard, in a dense area, you will probably have good luck finding a way to dispose of it properly. Not all areas refer to this as "e-scrap" but I have heard it called that, and they will have a special day to pick it up. YMMV.

Best Buy takes old electronics. PCs need to have the hard drives removed. I think they charge you $10 but then give you a $10 gift card in exchange, so it's kinda free if you need something from there.

Check google for local places - just be aware that some places will charge you to take your old electronics [win-win for them - they profit from you paying them to take it then turn around and sell it to someone else to disassemble the components.]

I know Best Buy will take up to 2 items per day [I have to lug a 32" mega-heavy Sony flat screen tv to them someday]

that's what I was going to say. I'm not certain about the $10 though. I brought in an old 27" CRT TV and they charged me $10 and gave me a $10 gift card. I thought the $10 "fee" was on larger stuff like TVs

Send it to China directly and cut out all the "recycling" middle man businesses since that's what they do with it anyways.

If you put it in a black bag they won't know that it's a computer. If you think they might suspect it, dump all the internals out into various bags.

Win for you!

Unfortunately... Some kid's probably going to be stripping the PCBs and cooking them to extract whatever the hell is worth a few cents.

Office Depot is taking a lot of different old electronics right now and recycling them. It's temporary I think and I think you get a store credit. Might want to check it out before the end of the week.
