Best place to get two new tires...? *EDIT* SR vs H rating?

StageLeft

No Lifer
Rear blew on the maxima this morning. All tires on it have 18k, but I changed the fronts with the back about 2k ago. The backs (what used to be the fronts) were worn, but they were not worn out. The fronts are in great shape. Hopefully the rim isn't bent at all, but mrsskoorb was driving and I wasn't there.

So, I need two new 16" tires and I'll get both rears changed at once. I have access to Big 10 tires and sears and crap like that. Which is likely to be the cheapest? I'm uninterested in buying high end tires.

Thanks, and you're just a sweetie for answering!

*EDIT* So, do I really need H rating vs the lower rated SR?

Just call them and ask. I just had a front tire blow on my wife's Saturn and the tires all had 18,000 miles on them. I put one new tire on it that is the same as the other three to the tune of $100 including everything. It was a Firestone tire.

Sam's Club? I'm sure Wal-Mart has em too...

If you're going for the best price, call around. See if you can find an ad in the yellow pages for a place that sells tire brands that aren't advertised nationally...

Unfortunately given the wear of the rear tires I can not replace only one because then I have 3 good tires and the one remaining worn ont heb ack. So I gotta do both rear 🙁

if you want a decent quality,
i wuold just purchase them from Tirerack or Discounttiredirect and have em installed at BJ's for 3 remove/mount each tire and 6 to balance each tire.

Are those places online or something? I need it done tomrorow morning...

I will try NTB as well.

The brand will be different. They're using some weird brand I've never heard of on the car - pirellis (just kidding!). No, they are cheapy doos, so I'm going to mix brands, but I don't see this to be a problem since it's two wheel drive car as long as I keep brands consistent front and back probably... (?).

Holy crapola - at least on the website NTB has piss-poor prices 🙁 Two of their tires for instance that other stores have are about $170/piece vs. $130.

Yeah...should be fine.

But, I'd put the two newer tires on the rear. I've heard/read that having the better traction in the rear is better for front-wheel drive cars. It reduces the chances of oversteer.

Isn't understeer a bigger issue, though...? Nonetheless, since the rear is the one that blew I'll just put the new ones on the back 🙂

Big10 can give me the best price at $260 installed for some SR rated (118 mph) tires on the back - some cheap michelins. Or for $308 (vs. $340 for same tires at Sears - although sears likely has a better warranty) I can get michelin H rated tires (130 - standard rating on my car).

Does it really matter? I have only exceeded the SR rating once and although I do plan on topping out the maxima sometime in my life for as long as it takes to top it out and get back down, that's the only time I'd think the rating speed really matters. Thoughts?

You can't wiat like 2-3 days ?

shipping is about 20-25 bucks for the 2 tires, or it might be cheaper.

and I'm pretty suer you can get better tires at a better price on Tirerack.com

I bought 4x 15" Yoko's for the family CR-V for 212 shipped.

I'll be purchasing my replacement 17" at TireRack when I need to for the IS300

Nope, you can't go without a car in this city at all!!

Damn their prices at tirerack are awesome though, even after shipping.

I like America's Tire, they'll get you any tire you want, usually the next day if it's not in stock. And if there's a problem with a tire, they'll replace it.

Bridgestone Potenza RE-950. If you can get hold of an entertainment book there should be a coupon for 25% off at the Firestone stores. They're HR Rated and have some really great ratings on Tirerack.com. I have em on my car, and my sister has them on her car. It has a 40 or 45k treadlife warranty (depending on tire size).

I just had to get 3 new tires that were 215/65/16. Got them at BJ's for 220 installed. I was checking out walmart couple days after I got them at bj's to see if I got a good deal. Well walmart did have some tires cheaper but I don't know the quality. They ran about 55 dollars a piece, I don't know what installation would have been.

A Maxima and you are uninterested in high end tires??!! THE SHAME. Well my Dunlop FM901s in that size were only about $100 each including installation at Discount Tire and they stick like glue..

Best bet is to go to a Super Wal-Mart. They have very cheap tires with their name on them, but are made by other najor tire makers.

BTW real quick - visually with the tire on the rim looks ok according to mrsskoorb...if there is minor damage that she can't see is it likely that this tire place can hammer it back into place? Hopefully the rim is ok...

Oh and walmart has none of mine in stock 🙁

Those Bridgestone tires suck. I have the Blowtenzas on my 2003 Maxima and they are the worst tire in the rain. I would recommend Michelin. Check out www.maxima.org for suggestions on tires. You will find pretty much the same reaction to the Craptenzas by the maxima.org members. Lots of complaints about hydroplaning on wet roads.

You're lucky, I have 17" tires on my car. Those are going to be pricey when I have to replace them.
