best place to exchange currency?

I'm going to India in a few days and am going to need to need some rupees so I can buy stuff - I know better than to do it at the airport, but what's my best bet to get the most per dollar? Should I hit up a bank once I'm already in India, or do it here?

Do it at your bank here. You'll probably have to either go to their main branch or call them first so they can transfer the Rupees to wherever you're going to pick them up.
