Coworker wants a gaming computer and will spend up to $2k. He doesn't need a monitor, so he should be able to get a pretty nice rig.

I always build mine so I have no idea as to where to look for high end systems. He looked at Dells, but I would image there's better places out there.

Thanks

Dell is actually a pretty good choice for someone with that kinda money to spend, if he does not want to build his own. Tell your friend to check the Dell Outlet store for XPS 410. That is where the best deals are to be had.

EDIT: He is probably going to have to add his own video card to get the best deal, but that is an extremely painless operation. Complete C2D system for ~$900 with 2gb of ram and a 250gb hdd, and then add an 8800GTS for another $350. Under budget and over-powered for any resolution less than or equal to 1600x1200.

Flip through HardOCP's builder reviews. Really neat concept.

Maingear, who's gotten really good marks from them, looks quite promising. Load up that C2D Prelude online, or -- apparently -- you can call them and talk to someone who'll give actually useful configuration advice. (Sort of useless for an AT reader, but good for your colleague.)

Wait for AMD/ATI to come out with R600. A $1500 computer with R600 will own any $2000 computer built today. IMHO, memory is way too expensive and hardly worth the investment. The lower priced modules are coming down in price. Invest in those with known OCability...if you want to OC.

Operandi, pudget seems nice but at their prices I would go with a voodoo or falcon nw. Maybe their less expensive machines are reasonably priced but on their quad core watercooled one they seriously overcharage for upgrades. The processor was about $300 over newegg to order, bfg's watercooled 8800gtx (which comes with the block installed and a lifetime warranty for 800 at newegg) was 1050 as an upgrade. I have no problem with companies making a profit, but if they are already charging for support and have a bilt in fee then upgrades should not cost more then retail (though voodoo has done similar things in the past, not quite as bad but similar).
