Best place to buy beer in Manhattan?

MrChad

Lifer
I just moved here from MD, so I'm not used to the whole "beer at the grocery store" concept. In MD, we have liquor stores that sell beer, wine and liquor. Here they have "wine and spirits" stores, but beer seems to be sold only at grocery and convenience stores.

The problem, of course, is that these stores are small and the selection sucks. Plus the prices are outrageous ($10 will only buy you a six pack of Sam Adams). I usually like premium or local brews, but I haven't had much luck with the stores in my area. Any NYers with suggestions?

Thanks.

manhatthan's grocery generally have expensive prices anyway. your best bet is to go to brooklyn or queens, or even lower manhatthan and see the sale flyers at grocery stores. it's only cheaper when it's on sale. try eckard's (sp?) and stop and shop

i dont think there are any costos in manhattan....but like sniperruff said, the large chain pharmacy superstores like eckerd, duane reade, and rite aid carry beer and may be on sale. but beer in manhattan from delis and groceries are really expensive
i think ive paid $10-12 for a six pack...you might as well go down to a bar for happy hour or something

Just "beer" or "fancy imported designer beer?"

If all you want is Heineken/Bud/Coors/Colt45, go to any one of the 53, 013 Korean grocery stores/delis. They ALL sell beer.

And YES, it's expensive. You're in NYC now; you wanna live like the Big Boys, you gotta spend like the Big Boys.

Cheapass Maryland hicks....sheesh! 😉

I don't get liqour sales in other states. Here in California, if you want beer, you go to the beer aisle in the grocery store. If you want wine/liquor, you go to the wine/liquor aisle, it's usually right next to the beer aisle.

If the grocery store doesn't have enough variety for you, you can go to a liquor store, where they sell hudereds of different varieties of beer, wine, and liquor - all under 1 roof.

Damn...$10 is expensive? I've been paying $12.50 for a 6 pack of Beck's in my area (gramercy). I usually buy from deli's. Like MichaelD says, you gotta spend some money to live in Manhattan : ) I've been living here for 20 years though.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I am getting used to the *slight* (😉) cost of living increase here. I think there's a Costco just across the river in Queens; I might have to check out their selection.

for regular stuff, go to any Food Emporium or whatever.

for better stuff, get yourself to Heartland Brewery

they brew their own stuff. the Apricot Ale is amazing, but i think it's seasonal.

they're stout is much better than Guinness, IMO.

There are liquor stores. You just need to know where to go. And the closest Costco to Manhattan is located in Brooklyn.

Rite-Aid sell  cheaper than my local grocery store if that helps at all MrChad 🙂
