What is the best PDA out there for the buck? I've used the Jornada 548 (have it now), but was thinking about going to a newer iPaq or the Jornada 568. What do you guys (and gals) think?

Yeah, my needs are I have a lot of money to spend due to research grants, and I want something new to play with. I don't want to feel stupid with my upgrade though.

nfs4 knows :p

I know you can get a sleeve for the ipaq that can hold a 256mb compact flash card and has an extra battery pack

All Windows CE machines are horrible choices for a PDA because they run out of battery power in like 3 hours (I know from experience).

Get a Palm or a Handspring, those things run for months on a single set of batteries.

It just depends on what you want to use it for, alot of stuff a win ce pda can do that a palm based pda cant

edt.
Palm = Dos
PocketPC = Windows

in terms of functionality ;)

Any "useful" thing that Win CE can do, Palm can also.

Watching video on a postage stamp sized blurry screen at 10fps is not "useful". You can hardly see anything and battery power runs out halfway through. Again, I know from experience.

hmmm, simcity2000 ;)
I can at least say that the pocketpc applications are ALOT better than those on palms, in terms of functionality and ease of use. Speaking from experiance, I have an ipaq, mom has a palm.

Video you say, it can be watched full screen at full speed, not 10fps.

I had the Toshiba PCMCIA drive (as featured in the iPod) in mind.

From my experience, my Handspring Deluxe runs out of batteries in a few weeks. It's supposed to last 8 weeks on average according to the manual, but I've had more like 4 weeks so far.

Personally, I like the Handspring Deluxe because it's CHEAP, and it has some great deals. The PDA with a wireless @ctivelink is only $80 most places. The Springboard module on the back has a lot of accessories. I just got a Magellan GPS unit for $25 after a rebate. I love my Handspring.

It's kind of simple, but if all you really need is an advanced personal organizer (like me) it's just right.

Too bad you don't know jack squat!

PocketPC's can playback full screen video at 320x240 @ 20 - 30 FPS. So spread your sh!t somewhere else.

PocketPC's can also playback MP3's, WMA's, MPEG, ASF, ASX, DIVX, AVI, and RealVideo files. PDA's like the iPAQ and e570 have battery life in the 8-10 hour range. The Jornada 560 has battery life in the 10 - 12 hour range.

Too bad you don't have much "EXPERIENCE" or you wouldn't be lying right to these peoples' faces. I HATE liars! :|

There are a whole bunch of simcity clones for the Palm as well, and I recall seeing at least one official version at some point.

Applications being "easy to use" is a completely subjective opinion as you too will readily admit. It is probably because you are a Microsoft weenie and unable to accustomize yourself to a world where Microsoft programs and interfaces are not the norm. This is sad, but it is an area in which you need to educate and improve yourself.

Yeah, the ORIGINAL, basic SimCity. Not SimCity 2000 which is an official release of the game. It is the EXACT same game in fact and you can even use your same old city files you used on your PC for the PocketPC.

You just look like another anti-microsoft zealot. Just registered this month, only 5 posts, and already talking junk.

Dude, you build cities. It is the same game. Who cares whatever number you add after the name.

Are you one of those Microsoft weenies who thought that Windows 98 was a different product than Windows 95? Let me give you a clue, it was a service pack that Microsoft sold for money. Putting a year after the product name does NOT mean a different product.

People like you amuse me to no end.

I have (deep breath):
An iPaq (3850), the Clie, a Palm M505, an HP Jornada 720 and a Handspring Visor Edge. So I've used offerings from all of the major suppliers.

I use an extensively 'jacketed' iPaq for work, and the Clie after work (because it's smaller and it gets more 'oohs'. Yeah, call me shallow). Because both sync with Outlook on Exchange Server both at home and work (at home I also have an Exchange Server which updates from the office server) it's a very flexible solution. I also have a Sony digital camera and the Clie accepts the Memory Sticks and I can look at the pix on a bigger screen. The Clie is for me definitely more of a toy.

Apart from that, I usually take the Jornada if I'm travelling in place of a laptop if it's for a couple of days abroad. I can (at a pinch) use stuff from home or office with the Terminal Services Client which ships with the 720 - apart from that it does all the emailing, documenting and spreadsheeting I could normally want on the move. Once again, I have the 720 cradles for both home and office so I can sync from either location.

The Palm software is not as flexible as PC2002 if you're a contacts fiend - fewer fields are available and I've found occasional problems in syncing with Outlook. The other issue is that of the Outlook XP 'virus protection' which (but of course) interferes with all non-MS sync software, including Palms.

Generally speaking, the expandability of the Pocket PC range is what wins out in a hobbyist/geek/business situation. If you're simply a networker who wants to organise their contacts, jot down a few notes, a Palm is all you need - they run longer and cater for a simpler need better.

In my opinion the ipaqs are the best pda's

I have a palm m100 myself (got it for free from the infinity "hot-"deal) and I would exchange it in a second for an ipaq
if they just weren't so expensive

PS: I HATE MS-ZEALOTS!!!!

Do you even KNOW the difference between SimCity and SimCity 2000??

OMG you are such a hopeless case that it isn't even funny. It's one thing to argue something you understand, but it's a complete DIFFERENT thing to argue about something you are TOTALLY ignorant about.

Everyone ignore this troll
