Why ask for advice if you are not going to use any of it?

What advice have you given?!?! NONE! I have taken everything into consideration and since you cannot read my mind I will go as far to do the impossible and explain something to you.

A) I am not going to buy KSC 35s because I have decided (after reviewing all comments) that I would like closed-ear headphones.
B) I have read reviews on the above mentioned headphones at the suggested sites, and decided that since the Sennheiser headphones are not fully closed-ear, that I would like to avoid them (because of past experience with only 3/4 closed ear headphones).
C) Most of the aforementioned headphones are well out of my price range, by at least double, and the ones that aren't are not exactly what I am looking for.

I have appreciated all suggestions, and thanks to Bent-Valve (valve=penis I'm guessing), I guess I will go elsewhere to find my information because obvioulsy I am not taking comments into consideration and am disregarding everything (I find it amazing Bent can so accurately read my mind). Thanks to all you who were positive and helpful in your comments, and I appreciated them and took them all into consideration. If I had more money I wouldn't be in this situation. Thanks again.

How about get a job?

How about be more negative? There you go assuming again. Here, let me diagram my life for you so you might understand my lack of money.

I am in college, enrolled in 21 units, pay $500 in rent and share a room, have another $100 in grocery and electricity bills. My computer just went out on me, and so I had to spend another $500 to build a new one. I have labs all week, and write at least a 4-6 page paper per week for research, therefore allotting me plenty of time to get a job (yeah right). I receive no financial aid in the summer, and therefore have to save every penny to pay rent to make it to Fall term. I suppose you're right, I could sacrifice my grades to make a few bucks, but I'd rather not. $20 is even to much for me, but I need the headphones to play the occassional game, and listen to my music without disturbing my roomates, which are the only two things that keep me sane. Thanks for taking an interest.

spending 20 bucks on headphones is a waste of time. They are going to be total garbage. Save 70 and buy the V6's.

I know its a waste, but to retain some form of sanity through all this stress I need some now. Maybe I'll spend $5 and save the $15 and let the interest build in my bank account while I'm (as BentValve would put it) "still growing up."

Actually I will donate a nice pair of headphones to you if you are going to starve yourself by buying a pair.

Seriously, send me your addy and I will send them out tomorrow, PM me for more info. (they are actually excellent phones too)

Great googa mooga! Deuce24, please stay and enjoy Anandtech. It's an excellent site for information. Sometimes, some of the members here bite the heads off newbies for whatever reason (they had a bad day, woke up with a crick in their neck, dog peed on their foot during breakfast, etc, etc.) Please excuse them. Hehe. **Flame suit at dry cleaners, so please do not attack** 😀

And by the way, I have several of the above mentioned headphones: the HD 202s are fully closed, BUT if you have big ears, then they won't enclose them. But their the best non-amped closed phones out there in your price bracket. $20 at newegg when in stock, $29ish at CrapUSSR if you can't wait.

I'm suprised nobody has brought this up..

But one awesome sounding pair of earphones for general music use, albiet earbuds, are the Sennhesier MX400s. Best value for the sound in any earbud, ever, period, end of story.

the V-6's are terrible. i used to own a pair. if he can come up with $70, he should buy the Grado SR-60's. i still think that, in his situation, he should get the Fontopia 20th Anniversary Earbuds. here is a link to the epinions revies of these particular headphones. great little buggers.

[edit: on the epinions reviews, many people complained about poor fit. this was true of the older version, which only had 2 sizes of silicone pads. the current ones are shipped with 3 sizes. this totally gets rid of the comfort/poor fit problem that many people were having. and the case is not useless. some people just aren't smart enough to realize that it is used as a spool to shorten the cable when you don't need a lot of length. it is actually very well designed for what it does.]

LOL. those are terrible compared to the Fontopia 20th Anniversaries. i used to own a pair. definitely worth the extra $20 for the sonys. actually, the best value with earbuds are Eytomics. sure they cost $300, but they sound fantastic enough to make them a great value, if you have the money.

Operative phrase here being "IF you have the money." Who does? Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Forbes, Walton, Buffett...😉

I have no idea which earphones you are talking about.

You could be talking about either...

The EX50-51s
The EX70-71s
The MDR-888 (Which I highly reccomend!)

And the MX400s are the only ones that fit his budget.

I've tried the EX70s and was highly disapointed with them. Their highs were painful and scratchy. It all depends on what you listen to.

The 888s on the other hand, were nice and balanced and a nice addition to any arsenal of headphones.

get your ears checked. i use mine for everything from classical to downtempo. the design of the Fontopias put an emphasis on mid and lows. there is no way a non broken set sounds painful and scratchy. unless, of course, you weren't using the right pad for your ears and you weren't getting a proper seal. the EX70's have to completely seal the ear to work properly.

Well, i'll admit this. The EX70s certainley are popular little buds.

But if you gave me the choice between the 888s and the EX70s, It wouldn't even be a contest.

Like a minidisct.com boarder once said..

'The results are the EX70s are sort of mixed. You have some people that like them and some people that don't'.

'The 888s on the other hand, everyone seems to have positive comments about them'.

At any rate, you must conceded that the EX70s are extremley unbalanced, perhaps to compensate for the bass lightness of alot of portables out there.

My point is that the EX70s trebble is extremley harsh compared to the 888s and just about every other phone out there. (I've heard harsher, but that was a pair of earphones designed as a comm set).

Sometimes closely miked vocals are painful to listen to.

Actually the ER-6s are a great value at their bracket, too. Not just the ER-4P/S.

But then again the ER-4P/S have their own set of problems, being microphonic noise.

Trust me, i'm saving up for than ER-4P with S converter and an Amp. But not everyone has that kinda money.

i wouldn't call them extremely unbalanced.

If you look at the volume difference between highs and lows, with mids being in the middle.. i'd say it's unbalanced enough...

If you hook them upto a non portable (And consequently non bass-anemic) source you'll see what I mean.

The biggest argument for 'Unbalancedness', is that if you hook them up to a non sony source their sound signature changes significantly.

The EX-70s were designed around the sony sound platform, period.

Like for instance..

EX70+Sharp has the potential to be a real bass overload. Sharp is really strong on the bass.

I didn't read the whole thread, so let me know if I missed something.

Anyway, don't get the Koss KSC-35's. They're nice and cheap, and they sound fine. BUT, after wearing them for a few hours, they really get uncomfortable. They make my ears hurt. Also, the sound isolation is very poor. They don't block any outside noise, and treble at any decent volume is very audible to anyone around you.
