Mainly using the comp for coding, music, wow, d3 and random AAA/Steam games as I get round to them. I'm thinking that there might actually be no point to upgrading outside of getting a second 7970 for CF atm and just put upgrade funds into an account for use with Haswell rather than locking myself into a deadend platform just to upgrade again in a year so advice would be really helpful before my tax return comes through.

If you must upgrade. LGA1155. But you should wait for Haswell and go the LGA1150 route.
