what would be the best heatsink for an intel p4 in the $20-50 price range? does alpha
still make quality heatsinks?? i ve seen tons of people praise the thermalright
one, should i get that one instead?? and what about the fan?? i hear delta & sunon are good ?? i would probably need to stay under 35dBA or so.. thanks

Thermaltake P4 Spark 7 (A1545) Heatsink Sleeved (for not that much overclocking)
Thermaltake Volcano 7+ (for best oc potential, but is large and might not be able to fit in MB plus because of size can put strain on CPU connector)

Thermaltake is a great heatsink company they are very highly regarded. Anywhere you read a review of their heatsinks they get high praise. I recommend them in particular because those two above come with a manually adjustable fan.

if you get it from
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=46_55
they'll sleeve the wires for you too in what ever color you like.

I don't think you can really make a bad desision on this. Pentiums don't really need a kickass heatsink. They are relatively cool. You can overclock them with the stock Intel HS/FAN (with some added thermal paste). Just get some thermal paste to dab on the cpu.

Thermaltake is regarded pretty universally around here as crap. I have a Thermaltake cooler on my video card and it's unbearably loud. Thermaltake seems to be much louder and much more expensive for what they're worth. You're going to get swamped with people recommending one of the Thermalright heatsinks, of which the big boy is the SLK-900u

1) Zalman 7000

2) Thermalright SLK900U + fan of your choice (Panaflo L1A should work just fine unless you're OCing like a mofo)

Both of these are top dog for P4 cooling + silence.

Thermaltake isn't very good. Stay away from them.

Thermaltake is really crap? I use the Volcano 7+ on it's medium fan setting, seems to work well. The volcano isn't noticably loud at that setting, can't really hear it on the floor by my feet. I overclocked a P4 2.0 to 2.6 with it. I don't have any complaints. Well I was kinda going for cheaper not the best, what I recommended is 15 bucks less than what others rec.

You really can tell the difference between the Thermaltake on medium and other cpu coolers??

the slk will reach very coooold temps with a high CFM/but LOUD fan.
but the zalman is quiet and cool but can also be modded to use any fan <=92mm

Lol,Sorry to burst your bubble there Yianaki, but Thermaltake HSF's are loud and hot im using a volcano on my athy 1.333 and its loud enough that I can't sleep with it on, and hot enough that my central AC won't lower room temps down so I can stay in the room less than 10 minutes without sweating. By all means DON'T EVEN CONSIDER a Thermaltake HSF which usually costs around the same price range of top range hsf's. Personally the ZALMAN CNPS 7000 series is my fav... dead silent with top notch cooling capabilites whether you're overclocking or not you can't go wrong with it.

Another vote for the Swiftech MCX4000 - with a quiet (Panaflo) 92mm fan. I've tried the SLK900U and the CNPS700Cu on my IC7-2.4c setup and found the MCX4000 to be the best of the three. As already noted, it is a little more pricy than the other two.

The zalman 7000cu is awesome. I have one on my P4 2.8@3.0, and its running cool and quiet. The clamping system holds it well even though its 700g of copper on it. On cool nights its been running 31c idle, 38c on full crank. Totally awesome. Check it out.

Alpha pal with a panaflo or for even quieter than a Zalman, use a Papst 12dBA fan. I will never go Zalman considering you cannot chose your fan granted it comes with a 92mm 20dBA fan.

Alphas haven't been as competitive as they used to be, and they haven't been coming up with new products too. The PAL8942 is still their flagship P4 cooler IIRC, and while it still performs admirably, it doesn't run with the big boys like the Themalright SLK900 and Swiftech MCX4000, both of which can be bought for under your $50 budget limit I think. Of course, your choice of fan here makes a difference in price :)

Sorry to burst your bubble sman789 but the SLK900U cools very, very well, even with very quiet fans.

I running a 92mm Panaflo L1A on my SLK900U at 8 volts (1500 rpm) and it keeps my P4 2.4C at around 30°C at idle and in the low 40°C range at Prime95 load. This L1A at 8V is completely silent inside my case and with the door off you can't hear it if you're over a couple of feet away.

A lot of people are using SLK900s (and 800s) with L1A Panaflos and are running cool and quiet. That is by no means, something that Zalman has a lock on.

The Genuine Intel P4 fan/heatsink is very good. They are very quiet and the RPM is temp controlled. The only thing I would change is to replace the heat pad with some grease. Unless you are into major OC'ing, I would go with one of these. They are sold by on-line vendors; Tiger has/had them for $19.
