My friend is looking to get a 2x1GB PC4000 from OCZ for his Opteron rig.

The two kits he is looking at are:

OCZ PC4000 Gold Gamer Xtreme

OCZ Gold PC4000

They have the same memory timings and are both rated at DDR500.

Is the Gold GX worth the extra $20? As far as I can tell the only difference is the heatspreader.

Any other suggestions?

This will be running with:

Opteron 175
Asus A8N32-SLI
Hitachi Deskstar 250gb
BFG 7800GT OC
blah blah blah...

The GX may have a tiny bit more headroom, but IMO, I wouldn't be able to justify $20+ for a +0.05 voltage difference with same timings.

Maybe look around at reviews? If he wants the best OC'ing ram, then he should go with 2x512mb or spend more. :p.

The Gold works great for me, and I do think that the only benefit of the GX is the heatspreader. The size of the RAM more than makes up for the timings, at least for me, since I play BF2 and do lots of video encoding.

Thansk, he went with the Gold GX. He was running some OCZ PC4800, but it's 2x512mb and he really wanted to make the switch to 2GB. I'll take the extra GB of memory over some a little bit of bandwidth or timings any day!
