Best overclockable Athlon? 1700+ to + 3000+!?!?!?

I was reading in another forum that some people are getting 1700+s up to like 2.5Ghz(3000+) is that true? How in the heck are they doing that? I've got a XP2000 that will barely get to XP2100. I'd like to know cuz I'll drop they cheap 50-60bux for one of those 1700s!!

These processors are the new, Thoroughbred "B" processors, which are the same core as is used in the XP2800+ processors.

Most of the lower speed ones are higher speed ones that have been sold at low speeds to fill demands.

Your XP2000+ is more than likely the old, Palamino core, which topped out at 2100+ levels.

Confused

Kdog,
I know what you are feelin... I had an XP T-bred 1600+ and that OC'ed to 1.8xxGHz on default voltage. Then I got a XP 2000+ Pal. only to reach 1.73GHz. If you can find, which isn't hard at all, it is worth it. The system was definitely faster with the increased clock speed even if I set them to the same MHz speeds.

Now did they have to unlock it? Or can you just do a FSB increase 166FSB? I am REALLY tempted to give this a shot. I heard some of them come unlocked, that would be a dream... This would be a great cost effective way to build a bunch of cheap, powerful SETI/Folding@home machines.... Hmmm. I wonder if Newegg would work with me on making sure I got a B revision.....

I didn't unlock the multiplier but instead just raised the FSB. You can buy them unlocked at some places. I believe you can get that here: Store 1 But the simple increase of bus speed is all you really need. Do keep in mind my cheap NIC card would prevent me from hitting 166MHz FSB. ( Linksys, Netgear, 3COM 3905C-TX.) The only one that would work for me was the 3COM 3905C-TX-N. Good Luck!

Most everyone has an Nforce 2 motherboard, will allows you to select the mulitiplier without unlocking the CPU.

I am currently running 185 fsb X 12. Epox 8RDA+, 1700 B +

I did have a XP 2000+ that would only overclock to a 1.75ghz.

i have one also..
its like confused said, they are newer chips knocked down in speed. a site over in england (not sure where you live) has them for sale, they garentte steppings and so can garentte a very good overclock..
where i got mine from
i have yet to try it, because i dont have good enough memory, i have to get some corsair xms 3500 stuff to really try it out..
i have been hearing stories of people getting over 3 ghz with some of these cpus.. one guy had a 100% overclock with using -7c water..

look down the bottom of this page..

theres the link 😀
i often wonder what im going to get with mine when i get the memory.. i have an epox 8RDA+ nforce 2 board as well, just waiting to be turned on and overclocked!! darm you money!!!!

yup, mine's running at 2.5GHz
see my system rig...

like i said, i cant wait to get mine working, its just shame about the graphics card that i will be using until i can get a really fast ati card..
i want something thats quite a bit faster than the 9700 pro that i had, i might have to wait a bit, but i dont care!!
also, would this be a good setup to use if you where video capturing? i plan on getting a 1gig of 3500 corsair memory, so i hope that the board will be ok with this.. i have an epox 8RDA+ nforce 2 board.. would this work the way im planning on? (im aiming for 2ghz at a 200fsb) the chip i have is a 2600 clocked down.. so i hope i can get a little more on top too
