Best Overall MOBO for Athlon XP is...?

Im building a new system, and want to get the best possible MOBO out there. I have a Radeon 8500 that I will be using as my video card. Extra USB slots are not a necesity as I have a USB HUB. Currently I have 3 physical harddrives, its a long story, that equal 73gb of data. There all pretty close to being full, and I was thinking of buying 1 Western Digital 80gigger to put in this new system. Would I need RAID for this? I will be using WIndows XP and Athlon XP 1800. Id like to do some minor OC'ing on this card, so Id also need a MOBO with a highly customizable BIOS for the FSB, and temps, etc. Whats the best for all this? I need to get some boards going through my head, since my birthday is coming up, and if I dont through out ideas now, I may never get the chance. Please help. Thanks!

the iWill XP333 is a good board ...excellent board

people will boo it for being an ali magik chipset but the performance is comparable to the kt266a (slightly slower, unless u overclock - this board is prime time for overclocking)..

most people will recommend via kt266a boards, but i simply can't ....for nearly the same performance (or better), i'd go nforce 415D or SIS 745 (ECS K7S6A) boards...the SIS boards are far cheaper and perform very well...otherwise, like i mentioned - that iwill ali board is nice for the price....

I chose the Abit KR7-RAID, it is fast, reliable and has 6 PCI, 4DIMM and onboard RAID. I love it so far (have had it running for 1 month).

Dude snidy, I want my CPU to be just like urs. its going to I mean. Whats your score in 3dmark2001 se? Im JW, I have a Radeon 8500 that im also gonna OC, as well as that Athlon 1800. I cant wait for all this. Just gotta get funds together. What kind of case and PSU do you have?

Amen

there are so many to choose from do your homework on the capabilities of these mobos

Take a look at some Soltek boards out there like the 75DRV4 or 75DRV5, nice boards that overclock well.
I haven't tried all of the boards out there cause I'm not a gadzillionaire but I like these boards.

There are a bunch of mobos out there where you can't really go wrong, Epox, Abit, Iwill, Soyo, etc, basically the ones listed here. You need to go read up on these boards and figure out what sounds best to you.

I currently have 2 PCs running with ECS K7S5A boards and 1 machine running with an ECS K7S6A board. Both boards are incredibly stable and have caused me nary a problem since installing them under Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro. I can't talk for Win9x/ME, but who wants to run those anyway? 😀

These boards are also dirt cheap and offer some overclockings potential, although not the hardcore overclocking that others talked about here do.

Abit KR7A-133...I don't own one, I have an Asus =P.

ECS boards can seriously kiss my rear end...I've had to return that thing to Fry's 4 times so far. It has gotten to the point that most of the K7S5A at Fry's are all RMA'd boards.

5th time is a charm I guess. They always give me problems when I boot it for the first time though. Some CMOS/RAM problem that gets magically fixed the 5th time I power up.

A question like this will most likely result only in Biased answers...

Most people will answer "this is the best board I've ever had"... when in fact, it's probably the only XP compatable motherboard they've ever owned...

My advice... is to go read some Mobo-reviews and form your own opinion based on what features you desire.

if you can wait, i'd go for the asus a7v333 (their kt333 solution) or whatever it's called. Asus is known to produce top performing boards with top stability. It also has a nice heatsink on the chipset instead of an ineffective noisy fan. With the internal diode monitoring, asus reps have shown that you can take off the heatsinks without damaging the cpu. I am not sure if it comes with raid though.

btw I own an epox kt266 board. very good board but lacks some nice features the asus has.

Yes, so in that case, let me cast my vote for the Soltek SL75DRV4 or SL75ERV.

EXCELLENT.

I've had my Abit KR7A 133 RAID for 6 days now and it runs like a dream.

Very expadable to. I just love it.

Still have that "new computer smell" here in my home office too. Nothing like it. 😉
