Best Over-clocking Value-RAM

So with some of yalls help and opinions, I've gotten everything for my first build except the RAM. This is it so far:

Athlon Mobile 2400+ 35w (w/ SLK947-u and 92mm Panaflo L1A)
NF7-s mobo
Hitachi 80 GB SATA HD
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
Antec Sonata Case
NEC 2500-A DVD Burner
Sony Floppy Drive
120mm Panaflo L1A for front case

What I'm wondering is if I plan to overclock minimally, but some, what would be my best bet for value RAM....I know thats a bit of an oxymoron. I've decided that it'd be better to have a gig of value ram, rather than 512mb of higher quality RAM that would overclock more smoothly, and for my budget right now its either one or the other. OCZ, Corsair, Kingston, Geil...? Something else?

hi, there. look, if you want to make a real overclock, and money is not a problem, get ocz@500 mhz (2.5,3,3,6) or corsair pc3200 cl 2 (dual ddr kit), or kingston hyper x pc 4000 (2,3,3,6), or a-data vitesta pc 4000 (the best price/performance ratio). good luck
 
you won't get a very high fsb overclock with an athlon xp board, so ram should'nt be that much of an issue. Just change the multiplier since there is no working lock on the agp/pci bus.

I imagine this is why he asked for "Value RAM"

If you look at my rig, you will see that I use 1GB of Buffalo Tech PC3200, and have my XP2500+ running at 3200 speed, without breaking a sweat. I set the FSB at 200mhz the first time rebooting after windows was installed, and it's run that way ever since (since last Christmas).

I paid $160 for the Gig of ram. Now, prices have gone thru the roof lately, so I don't know what you will pay for it now, but that's my experience. Do with it what you will.
 
The thing with all overclocking RAM is that YMMV because it all depends on what chips you get. Save up and get some Mushkin Level 1/Hyper X/or XMS.
 
I'd just go for some Kingston Valueram.. the stuff works fantastic for a "value" chip... I use it in many PC's and they work flawlessly.
 
im running it right now at 210mhz without a hitch at 2.5-3-3-11. havent tried much more, but 2x256mb was less than 90 shipped from newegg

And I dunno, I'm not gonna be doing extreme overclocking or anything, so I don't think I'd necessarily get enough benefit out of saving up and spending $250+ on higher quality RAM.

Your mileage may very.

I think you should just buy some name-brand value RAM and overclock by upping your multiplier and save your money. But because chips can very so much within the same brand it's not something I would really bother with.

Kingston ValueRAM is my favourite though
 
just buy the kingston value ram 2x512 pc3200 for like 180 from newegg. it'll probably hit over 200 easy, and if not, at least you know it'll run at what it says it will =)
 
If you have about $200, might I suggest picking up 2 sticks of the kingmax pc4000 hardcore series from newegg. You are pretty much guaranteed to hit around 220 @ 2.5-3-3 and I am currently running my crappy 1800+ @ a 3/6 ratio (I know, it's stupid to screw with the ratio, I'm just doing it for shits and giggles) with the memory running at 266 @ 3-4-4. I have not heard anyone with a system able to handle it not hit at least 270. I have gotten to 240 on 2.5-3-3 @ 2.6V. After that, I get prime and memtest errors if I don't loosen up the timings a little bit (The RAM is rated at 3-4-4). I mainly got it because it was only a little more than the price of value RAM and at least gives me a little leeway in terms of being able to upgrade without necessarily shelling out a lot for more memory. For reference, I have a mobile 2400 on the way, so I didn't just get the RAM for an 1800, hehe 🙂

Oh yea, I ordered OEM but I don't think all they have is retail, as everyone I know who has ordered it has recieved it in brand new, sealed retail packaging.
 
I'm looking for some new ram too, and I am going to have a similar setup. Don't you need a really high FSB for PC4000?
 
Corsair Value Pc3200 will do an easy 230 fsb with timings of 2.5,3,3,11 on MOST Athlon64 mobos. Basically the best overclocking boards like the Aopens, Albatrons, Shuttles and Asus's.
 
Go with the Buffalo! I swear I used to read so many people a while ago recommending it for overclocking, it was like the hot thing. You will probably be able to get a good past its rated speed and possibly tighten the timings up more than its rated or just one of the two.

I just bought close to the same setup as you have:

Mobile 2400
ABIT NF7-s

I got the Corsair pc-3200 Value RAM from newegg.com, the 2.5 CAS not the 3 stuff. I set my multiplier to 11 and the FSB to 200 and I was at 2.2 (3200xp speed) right out of the gate. I haven't tried anything more than that but if I do I'm going to bump the multiplier not the FSB.

PS if you haven't OCed before the ABIT NF7-s is a dream to work with. Even the RAID is simple.

That was because it used the Winbond BH5 chips, not because it was Buffalo.

What are you talking about, Athlon boards do have pci lock. Check my signature


NF7-S boards are great boards but the newer ones will only do 210-220fsb normally. The older ones did much better
 
Watch out with these motherboards... they have a nak for giving people trouble if they don't get good ram. My current Kingmax PC3500 won't run on DIMM3, and there is a whole big issue about the Kingston HyperX series. I'm not really sure about the Kingston Value series, but I do know that Corsairs tend to run with little isntance of trouble.
 
i ran kingston value series 2x256mb pc3200 flawlessly
mine was a newer board and wouldnt hit over 210 no matter what multiplier, though
 
I have some Corsair Value Select PC3200 (2 x 512MB) on the way. When I get it I'll see how high it goes and I'll post the results here if the topic is still active.
 
^^Alright cool. I'm actually going to Fry's tomorrow to get some, so I can get started on this.. but I'm still curious how it does for you for future reference.

Thanks guys. So basically its narrowed down to Kingston or Corsair, since those seemed to have gotten the most responses....
