I agree it depends on the application but I use Mandrake 7.1, all the Windows flavors and BeOS 5 Pro, and if I had to answer this general question I would say Be no doubt.
 
Depends on Software, Hardware and amount of memory. I'd also consider Security and purpose of the System use.🙂
