Windows 7 works well with 1GB of RAM (currently running it on my MSI Wind). Other than that, usually XP.

Depends on your users, I know I'd probably throw Debian on mine if I owned one.

My Dell Mini 9 came with Ubuntu, which seemed to work fine.
Windows 7 is now on it, and also working gloriously.

I'm using Vista on mine (it was the only free license I had).

What size SSD do you have? I have the 8 gig and want to throw Windows 7 on there, but really don't think I have near enough space.

If you were to disable system restore, lower the space the recycle bin takes, turn off hibernation and lower the size of the page file, you could probably pull it off, although I'd imagine it would still get tight before too long. Any version of windows, especially Vista and 7, really like having lots of disk space.

I have two notebooks - one with XP Pro and the other with Vista Ultimate. The XP Pro machine can't do Vista. Maybe it will be able to do Win7. If so - that will be on both.

Given the parameters of your query...

I would say Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) "has worked the best for users."

Linux Mint 6 x64 (Felicia) has worked the best for me, but I have a notebook, not a netbook.

If you got a real stinker, Ubuntu Netbook Remix looks promising: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR ;)
