Best OS for gaming in 2001?

XP, 2k, ME or 98? (sorry, I am not going to type in little boxes ala 1984, Linux fanboys)

Currently running ME without a hitch. Wondering if I should switch to XP/2k once I get my Athlon 1.3 and DDR mobo.

I've never used an NT kernel OS as a home system before....concerned about lack of video/sound drivers.

Most of Win2k's compatibility issues are with older equipment. Win2k is definitely the way to go. Sharky Extreme is now recommending Win2k for their "High End Gaming PC." The stability difference is huge. As for XP, I have to point you to another thread...WindowsXP Rant. We need to send a message to Microcrap that we(as consumers) WILL NOT put up with this. XP is just Win2k with some nice user interface features. Do not let them get away with this. You can go with Win2k until Microcrap puts out a product that does not require you to phone every time you want to upgrade your hardware.

IMHO 98se

Expect about a 10% hit with Win2000, also I dont like all the patchs/hotfixes etc. Win2000SP2 should fix those then I possibly toss 98.

By then the NT kernel will be much more of a force, and there'll be a lot more support from game developers and video card drivers.

So it'll be a toss up between 2K and XP. XP will probably be a bit better, but at the same time that means you have to put up with thier BS.

Right now I will vote Win98SE for pure performance (though I prefer to use 2000, I won't claim it will perform as well as 98SE on all hardware with all games).

But next year, XP will have been released, NT5.x will be the standard for Home, Business and Professional users. I think that drivers will have been optimized for NT5 by then, and new games will be to.

There is nothing in Win9x that makes it a better gaming OS than NT5.
Home users typically use Win9x rather than NT, so game developers optimize for Win9x. Once game developers start optimizing for NT5, and good drivers are built for it, Win9x (Windows 4.x) will start to look like Windows 3.x.

Win2k/XP is definately the way to go for the future of gaming.

LOL@crt1530, my rant is already famous and it's only 2 or 3 days old.

That's a little uncalled for, XWindows is just as advanced a GUI as MS Windows, and you can set X to autostart so you never need to see a Linux command line.
But it is difficult to use Linux even with XWin, becuase the software compatiblity just isn't there. So as much as I like to toy with Linux you are right, for the time being MS Windows is the best way to go. Hopefully we will have better software support for Linux in the future, but I doubt it.

2k/Xp (same thing) will be best for gaming very soon. All the future games will be written with the NT kernel in mind. As Noriaki said, there is nothing that inheritly makes win9x any better for gaming than 2k, just that that's what the software is written for.

And just so you know every version of windows had a nice little command prompt you can use (ala 1984) just like Linux. Linux's just happens to be more powerful so more people use it as opposed to the GUI. Win9x is just as text based at it's roots as Linux is.
