Best Optical Mouse For Gaming?

Some might say the Microsoft intellimouse explorer 3.0, but I ditched mine for a razor boomslang! Its much more precise and IMHO has a better feel.

The new Logitech MX 500(corded) and MX 700(best cordless mouse for gaming) mice are awesome, some people have had problems with the mouseware software in gaming but you don`t need to install it and I believe Logitech have new mouseware out real soon.

Logitech MX 500 review

MX 700 review .

Btw Logitech now have the fastest optical mice, even faster then Microsoft.

Hello all. Best optical mouse would be Microsoft's Optical Intellimouse. The boomslang is the best overall but it cost big $$$. And it is not optical - just to make sure mamoose is aware of this.

For my gaming needs, I went through numerous optical mice to find that none of the first and second generations were able to keep up with "the flick" that is needed for fast paced FPS gaming (Quake3, Unreal Tournament, etc). All of those original mice had major problems with spinning 180 and had a lot of issues with lifting the mouse and moving it.

With the latest generation of optical mice (Logitic Dual Optical, MS Intellimouse3, Logitech MX 500/700), they all seem to cope with the flick just fine. I current have both the Logi dual optical and MS Intillimouse v3. Both of these mice are equal for my gaming needs and neither of my friends can tell the difference between their ball mice and my optical ones. Between the two, I prefer the logitech (my large hands prefer the smaller mouse), but others may enjoy the MS one more.

absolutely LOVE the MX500
best mouse I have ever owned.
but once again Logitech fails. the stupid Mouseware drivers would not allow ANY of the side/top buttons to work in games.
bye bye awesome feeling mouse. Took it back for an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 which I don't even like at all. but the buttons work in games

if side buttons are important to you, don't get the Logitech... it's sad.. but it's true.. this is coming from a hardcore FPS gamer.
Razer is good, but i found mine needed cleaning ever single night.. so i ditched that damn thing too.. only mouse that worked well for me in games was my OLDER STYLE Logitech iFeel Mouseman optical (only one side button that worked if you bound it to the "shift" key)

THAT was the best mouse I have owned for gaming.

I have had:

MS Intellimouse optical
MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
Logitech iFeel Mouseman optical
Logitech Mouseman dual optical
Logitech MX500
Razer Boomslang 2000

Microsoft Intellimouse Optical for me. Small enough to not be too big, 5 programmable buttons, and i's rather light. I've never lost tracking with it either. 🙂

🙂Thanks for everyone's opions and recommendations^My situation is that I built a new system and now have to gather up keyboard, mouse etc. for old one so I can sell it^So I will let my older MS optical go with it and look at whats being recommened here^I like most of what I am hearing about the MX series from Logitech, not interested in wireless but the 500 sounds great except for the software problem, also I really do not care for the extra button functions so what about the 300MX,is it just as good a performer as the 500?^I play 1942 and Medal Of Honor Allied Assault(just bought expansion pac "Spearhead"from WorstBuy)^I have a problem with 1942 and response times,I set mouse speed to max and I still don't move as fast as I can in MOHAA,anyone else have this problem? Maybe the coming patch for 1942 will address this problem(long time coming)🙂

All of the MX series have the same sensors and performance. The MX300 is styled like a standard mouse...the MX500 and MX700 has the most comfortable shape I've ever seen in a mouse.

I like my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. However, I cannot comment on other optical mice because I have not used them. All I can say is the Intellimouse Explorer 3 is a great mouse. As well, Microsoft handles RMAs quite well.

yep, they're beauties!

My intellimouse optical works great for me in BF 1942. I don't think I could live without the 5 buttons. I have my side buttons set to inside view and outside 3rd person view. That way when I'm flying, I can quickly switch from 3rd person for bombing to 1st person for dogfights. Yes, I use a mouse and keyboard for flying. I tried a joystick but wasn't as good with it.

I have the MX500 and love the feel of it - most comfortable mouse I've ever used. Very accurate as well.

That being said, the MouseWare software sucks. I can't in good faith recommend the mouse to a gamer until Logitech gets their act together and fix the button and scrolling issues.

I have just your basic microsoft intellimouse optical and I have never had a problem in any game. Very precise and fast even in shooters with a lot of action going on. It is pretty cheap at around $20. I don't think that there is that much of a difference besides price and feel of the diffenerent mice. Don't get a cordless mouse, they arent as good in my opinion when you are playing games and moving all over the place.

Another vote for the Logitech MX series. People have said there are problems with the drivers, but I wouldn't know, I just didn't bother to install them (same with any other mouse/keyboard). All the functions on the mouse have worked fine with WinXP and Win2k, and I'm also a hardcore gamer. Granted I don't mess with the extra buttons much (just 1 and 2 and scroll wheel are enough for me), but I can double check and see if it makes a difference.

Again, as others stated, the 300, 500 and 700 all use the same optical engine. The 300 is not contoured and has less buttons, allowing it to be used by right and left handers. The 500 and 700 feel and look great, like Logitech took a mold of your hand and designed a mouse around it. They also cleverly hide the 1 and 2 mouse buttons and integrate them into the shell of the mouse. Difference between the 500 and 700 is the 500 is corded. The 700 has a cool looking base that doubles as a charger. The NiMH battery life is excellent and charge time is really short. LED readouts on the mouse tell you if batteries are low, but its only happened to me once after about 8 hours of gaming. Put it on the charger and grabbed some food...camee back 1/2 hour later and it was fully charged again. Its as responsive as any corded mouse I've owned and is certainly more comfortable. Same smooth gliding action as every other optical I've owned.

Grr, come on... as soon as I go to buy a intellimouse explorer people find a better mouse, I'm still going to buy it :stuborn:
