Looking to buy a 165 opteron since i heard they will go up in price and be discontinued soon. What i want to know is if i o/c it to lets say around 2.5-2.7 ghz will i see a big improvement in games such as in fear or cod2? I want to run 1920x1200. Will it matter much? Is dual core the way to go for a gamer wanting to be prepared for the future? Also what is a good mobo for 165 with sli support?

I saw yesterday monarch had it for 271. But now its up to like 303. Anything out there under 300?

Well, it depends on the current proc as to the performance difference. But 2.7 is a very good number for any AMD proc, especially a dual core. It will prepare you for the future, since game developers will begin to write more for 2 threads. As far as mobos, the DFI SLI board is regarded as one of the very best for overclocking and performance in general, if not the best. For stores, I would wait until monarch has them in stock again, since the price is better than anyone else, and the steppings have been particularly good these last few months.

you'll only see real improvements in CPU intensive tasks like encoding and stuff. games, especially at 1920x1200, and then especially heavy ones like COD2 and FEAR, wont see any improvement at all. they're much too GPU limited at those resolutions. if you wanna be sure your games run smoothly, get a better video card.

though dual core is the way to go for the future, so the 165 is a very nice choice.

I'd pretty much guarantee you that you won't find any Opteron dual cores for under $300 anymore. Prices are going up - across the board. If you want one, I'd buy it ASAP.

i'm generally the cheapest out there. however, as i explained to my customers this morning via my newsletter, AMD, in some cases, raised their prices 92.00 on parts.

Nobody sells opteron 165s for $270 heh. The cheapest it ever was, was at monarch for an oem for $277 shipped. That was a long time ago and only lasted for like 3 days. The cheapest these days will be like Dave. Every other site is like $330 now.

That was a shocker. It was $303 earlier today. I may have to jump on one of these.

no, it's big enough that AMD realized their margins were getting shot by having opterons cross into their consumer level pricing...not a good thing.

Yeah. You should have bought one already if you planned on getting one. You can probably find one cheap around these forums. People have been selling them for $290-$300 shipped for used ones. Of course now that prices have gone up. You may see asking prices go up as well.

I am glad I got my cpu situation settled before the price increases. Ill be glad I got my opty 144 for $140 shipped now. :p
