Best Online Stock Broker?

I'm looking to start buying stocks online and am looking for the best online broker. People have recommended Etrade to me but their fees seem kind of high. Are they the best or are there better alternatives available?

Want to buy Mutuals as well? Consider Firsttrade. Want to just trade lots of stocks, MB Trading or Interactive Brokers. Scottrade is a mix of all.

I have accounts with FT, IB, and Scott. FT is for mutuals, IB is for short term trading, Scott for long term. I've had problems with execution of orders with scott, so that's why I opened an IB account

If you'd like more opinions, Advanced Search "broker"

If you want to invest for retirement, vanguard.com and VFINX is a good choice.

Don't use interactive brokers if you only have a grand or two. They charge $10/month. You'd need to do at least 2 trades a month. MBtrading doesn't have the fee.

Scotttrade is a positively horrible broker for traders. I'll go far to say it is one of the worst. Why? Their order fills are some of the worst in the industry, and if you're a trader this often means the difference between a profitable trade and one that sets you back a few points.

If you're not a trader then I suppose Scotttrader is fine. Ameritrade is also fine. It all depends on how much you trade.

I have used or currently use TradeStation and Interactive Brokers. If you're an active trader the commissions from even Scotttrader are simply too much. IB has some of the best order fills in the business and they have a solid API you can use to develop your own systems.

If you care about FAST orders DO NOT do Tradeking. I moved to Tradeking from Scottrade and I will be moving back because from start to finish to get an order in it takes about 1-3 minutes because their website is SOOO SLOW.
