Best old system

Wow, hard decision. In my head, my thought process in about 3 seconds just now:

"That's easy, SNES. No wait, the N64 was pretty awesome. But I still love the Dreamcast. Crap, forgot about the Playstation!"

I'm not picking one. 🙁

Since there is no "pick one system for the rest of your life" type of stipulation, I pick the SNES.

If I want to retro-game I want to play SMW, DKC1-3, SMK, SM, FF6, Mario RPG, etc. etc. In fact, for my birthday yesterday I took the day off from work and marathoned the entirety of LttP, and it was excellent.

NES.
Assloads of good titles.
SNES had less annoying audio and prettier colors, and plenty of great games. Lots more high quality RPG's too.

PlayStation for sure.

Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Spyro, Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid? F' the N64.

Overall, SNES - there's so many good games you can't go wrong (and you can cheat and add a Super Gameboy, too)

Perfect Dark and Ocarina of Time were good enough that I tracked down an '64 and carts a couple years ago, though. Just for those two.

my answer is based on time and fun with the system
1) N64
2) 3DO
3) Colecovision (yes Im an old fucker)
4) PS1
5) Saturn
6) PS3

why not both? this guy made some pretty cool console PC's specifically for emulators

NES PC

SNES PC

Those are pretty sweet, though not quite as cool as the Nintoaster. ^_^
I wounder if the Raspberry Pi could emulate Genesis games. The Genesis chassis is a bit too low profile for an Atom based mini-itx setup. Or better yet, a hacked Apple TV would do the trick.

Emulators are the way to go for classic gaming, especially if you don't own a CRT television. Anti-aliasing filters and GPU scaling make them look great on a flat panel HD screen.

Classic systems I'd want
-Genesis
-NES
-SNES
-Master System
-Vectrex

SNES... the golden age for console RPG's imo.

I'm surprised at all the N64 love... that system actually drove me out of console gaming until the PS2 era because the 3D on it gave me such bad motion sickness.

For me, it was definitely sega genesis. I was primarily a computer gamer, till this generation, be it Amiga or PC. So, sega was the only one I spent a lot of time with. And that was almost entirely due to the social gaming aspect of it. Many good memories of playing NBA Jam, Pit Fighter, etc. with friends.

We had a NBA Jam league. There would be 20+ people spectating the games some nights.
