Best of the free AT&T phones? Moto X, G2, iPhone 5, SGS4, Note 3, Lumia?

Work is providing a business line and phone to go with.. however they won't pay more than $1 for the phone.

Strictly a work only phone. Have an HTC One for personal use.

Thoughts? Thinking either iPhone 5 or Moto X.. dark horse would be the Note 3 but IDK if I'd want to be carrying that everywhere. Open to the certified-new phones as well.

Edit: Can't use my personal phone since my phone is rooted and the software (MobileIron/TouchDown?) won't work with a rooted phone.

For zero dollar I would get the Note 3. If you already have an HTC One though, if I were you I'd probably decide to get a different OS rather than another Android, so iPhone 5 will be it. Or if you are a daredevil, you could also go full crazy and get the Blackberry Z10 :D

Yea.. the different OS thing is why I'm more swayed for the iPhone 5.. but the Note 3, although quite a few months old, is glorious in its screen/size. Not going BB.. lol

The Note 3 is arguably the best phone among the whole bunch. It is also the newest, release-date-wise. The iPhone 5, on the other hand, is from the previous generation (came out in 2012).

First world dilemma :)

What's the usage of it for work? Make calls? Check emails? Or is there some work-specific app/program on a particular platform that would be useful for your work? That may help narrow down your choices. In other words... whatever IT says you should use. :p

Emails. IT said pick a phone thats free. I'd use my own phone but Mobile Iron won't work on my rooted phone.

If it's a work only phone, I'd be tempted by either the smallest (iPhone or the Moto X if iOS isn't your thing/you'd like a slightly bigger screen for usability's sake), or the one with the best battery life (G2 and Note 3 are close, G2 gets my vote for size reasons). You'll definitely need to keep both your work and personal phone on you?

Blackberry Bold. Maxes out your company contribution to the phone and will keep you focused on work, because you sure as hell won't be goofing off with that thing, anyway.

:D

Plus, it should last for a few days on a charge, so you don't have to coddle it like an actual smartphone :sneaky:

I've occasionally checked my work email via browser using our Corp webmail address on my last couple Android phones. . Is that what you're referring to? I'd hate to do it regularly on a smartphone browser.

Yes it is. It'd be nice if MS offered something like that in their Outlook app but it's not available.

Depends, if it's Exchange 2007, probably not. 2010 and later moved to an AJAX interface that's compatible with any browser, but 2007 looks pretty crappy on anything but IE.

Why can't you use Exchange ActiveSync, and use something like Nine or Touchdown to restrict any security policies to the email app?

As a work phone, are you allowed to install ANY apps at all? I don't know if I could handle any of the stock android keyboards. I guess I don't know what the G2 comes with but I hated the Samsung keyboard. I wanted to say Note 3 but without being able to change the keyboard I would just go with the Lumia.

I've been using OWA here and there with the browser but its very clunky.

No idea why they do what they do. They took my phone for a couple hours but couldn't get MobileIron and Touchdown to work since it's rooted so its either this or a Blackberry.. and I don't want a Blackberry.

No idea on apps.

Have them try Nine. If that doesn't work, the G2 isn't a bad choice.

It's very unlikely your issues with those applications are due to your device being rooted. More likely it's because of something that was done that rooting allowed to happen, but Touchdown generally doesn't care if a device is rooted. Unfortunately, figuring out just WHAT was done and undoing it might get a little tedious. What exactly did you do to the phone that required root anyway? Mostly I'm just curious, but maybe one of the things you did will jump out at us.

I think its the MobileIron part that won't work with the root. They won't install just Touchdown by itself.

I'm running a custom rom. Unlocked bootloader, s-off, super cid.

Honestly, it's probably the custom ROM part. A lot of software doesn't like it, mostly due to security concerns, and it wouldn't surprise me if MobileIron intentionally broke their software so it doesn't work in custom ROMs.

You should check to see if there's an Xposed module to disable whatever checks MobileIron is doing. There's one for Good.

But a free Note 3? I'd take that...

Is a Lumia 1020 free on contract? That would probably be my "useless device with some specific functionality I'd like to play around with" device.
