Best Nvidia AGP value?

I have a Abit IC7-G motherboard (AGP 8x slot) and am currently running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB, Intel P4 3.2 Ghz socket 478. I don't want to upgrade my motherboard and CPU yet just to have PCI Express. I would like to go the Nvidia route for various reasons, but it seems my choices are more limited. Is a 6600 or 6600GT really much better than a 9800 Pro? If not, what is that I could use?

A 6600 GT is at most about 20% faster than a 9800 pro and wouldn't be worth it. If we had a budget, e.g. $200, I could give you advice on what to buy

I wouldn't buy a 6600 GT to replace the 9800 pro. The performance gain doesn't justify the money spent.

The very minimum is probably a 6800 nu and then unlocking... or 6800 GT / GS or x800 xl.

And if you have the money... x850 xt pe... but you want nvidia... which in that case you'd better just get a 6800 GT / GS and OC.

I'm thinking about 250 to spend at most, maybe 300 if absolutely necessary. I really would like to get a 6800GS but they seem to only come in PCI Express versions. I checked Newegg.com and I also did not see any 6800's or 6800GT's in AGP,

I agree a 6600GT is not worth it if u have a 9800pro. Get a 6800GT or x800xl or x850xtpe as u will notice a bigger improvement.


Since there are none at newegg, wierd, how about other retailers

I do find that some 6800Gt is retailing for $300-$350 and its not worth it as 7800gt is roughly just $20-30 more and much faster.

Or if u adventurous enough try connect x800gto and mod it to x850xt.

I have a similar setup with a i875 mobo and a Intel Northwood CPU. I had a 9800 pro and upgraded to a X800 XL. It runs great, and the ability to up the screen rez and turn on more eye candy in older and even newer games is a big plus. I paid $250 for it at newegg. They are getting really hard to find now.

Best deal I've found is this one at ZZF:

BTW, the 6800 GT that DrZoidberg linked to is the 128 MB version. Not worth it.

wow oops i didnt see 128MB. I always forget that there is a 128mb 6800gt, since most are 256mb.

Yeah get the x800xl AGP for $271.

Or check for For Sale/Trade forum. I know some forum members are replacing their 6800gt/x800xl for 7800gt/gtx and u can get far cheaper like $180 as long as forum member is trustworthy.

6800GS will come out in AGP soon. Assuming it is @ $200 price point, get that.

Hmm well I wasn't sure if 6800GS would come out on AGP or not, but if it does I will definately go for that. If not, I guess I will have to think about an ATI.

The AGP prices are absurd. I'd need a 6800 or X800XL just to get a decent performance increase. I'm coming from a 3200+, 9800 Pro too.

And I read from one thread that ONLY the PCI-E connect3d X800GTO can be soft-modded. Otherwise that'd be the best deal probably. No mention of the 6800LE? Doesn't that have a good chance to unlock and o/c to around 6800 or even 6800GT speeds?

Basically it seems like my only choice would be X800XL or 6800 (GT if its around 250)... weak... what a waste of money!

6800GS in my opinion, 6800GT performance, much cheaper.

Edit: if they are available in AGP, i didnt even bother to check when they came out ive had PCI-E so long.

Edit 2: PCI-E only, id say get a used/refurb 6800GT/Ultra, you can get them on the cheap from people upgrading to 7800s.

An X800 XT is the equivalent of the 6800 ultra???? Are you serious??? The 6800 ultra is still ridiculously expensive. At some places it costs more than a 7800GT. My Radeon 9800 Pro just died on me and I need a new card, so if what you say is true, I'm definitely considering the X800 XT

That doesn't sound right to me (X800XT equivalent of 6800 Ultra). I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if the 6800GS AGP version sees the light of day.

Yes that is dead serious. The 6800Ultra is simply a 6800GT with faster clocks - it is overpriced and not as fast as even the 7800GT.

The X800XT and X850XT are still fast cards these days...

Go read the review AT did back when these cards came out, & you'll see that overall, the X800XT (or for sure X800XT PE or X850XT) > 6800 Ultra.
Especially now with the improved OpenGL performance from the new drivers.

There are a lot of nVidiots on these forum who'd like to believe otherwise, but nVidia lost the last gen performance war.

They did win it in terms of price/performance though, well, till the X800XL came out anyway.

Yup, it has always been the case because the x800xt pe was suppose to be just a tad faster than the 6800Ultra and the PE is 20MHz more than the XT.
People were fighting for the 6800Ultra last year and they went up to till $600+ (as well as the XT PE) while the XT was left alone right at $500 (MSRP@479).

Are you trolling? X series lost the performance war?
The new drivers improved X1 series card NOT X series card. ATi even admited that re writing the openGL code wasnt going to improve their OpenGl performance hence the 512GTX being 100%(thtas x2, so XT gets 30fps, GTX gets 60) faster in C of riddick.
And other openGl games apart from Doom3 where the memory controller boosts performance.

Anyway, are you forgetting SLi? are you saying a single X850XT PE can beat 2x 6800U SLi? That is the sole reason why NV didnt release NV47 or whatever to compete against the X850XT PE. And the funny thing is that the NV47 is the 7800GTX.

Get the 6800nu or wait for the 6800GS. OR x800XL. as i previously said.

ATi did not rewrite or do anything with their oGL drivers besides enable their new memory bus.
