There was a nice review on a sub on avsforum front page yesterday that might be for you.

The Hsu subs lack a DSP. More boom for the buck, but the lack of DSP will make it a less accurate. It's a trade off.

No real difference between a port and a passive radiator, and both can be tuned to be tight or boomy depending on the same parameters as a sealed box.

Dr Hsu understands bass and knows how to make a great sub, I would have no hesitation to recommend his products.

What are you going to do with the old Vel, I'm in Orange as well.

My brother has it disassembled in his garage right now. He is trying to look into what may be causing the problem but he says the task looks fairly daunting (3 seperate circuit boards he says). He says there is a velodyne repair center in Huntington Beach. If neither of those work out for me ill let you have it!

I'll recommend Hsu as the wife bought me one (VTF-15) three years ago and I love it. I've never thought of what I was getting out of it as being boomy or sloppy. Of course, YMMV.

yea reaction audio was the other one I was goanna mention, I have not heard it but I have heard the PSA

and FWIW for 2k$ you could buy the 24" SI sub, DIY yourself a box and get an amp and it would crap over most things.

Ported = boomy + sloppy.

Back in the day many ported subs were under damped with a FR peak in the 25-35hz range. Under this peak the FR often rolled off HARD( 36-48dB/octave for example). All of this combined would often lead to less than stellar sound quality.

A well engineered ported subwoofer will not have any of these issues and overall sound quality would be very difficult to discern from a high quality sealed subwoofer.
