Best Non-IBM HDD

After my third foray into the world of IBM HDD's, all ending in lost data and DOA hardware, i'm going to need a new HDD, can anyone make any suggestions as to a good, RELIABLE, hard drive? I can't stand to lose any more data (which i backed up frequently, but not frequently enough), especially emails and papers, any advise???

I have maxtors 1.6 , 3.2, 4.3, 8.7 and 45.6 GB since 1995 all still in use and in good working condition, adding 3 more 40GB maxtors to my new RAID 0 array very soon.

I have a maxtor that came with my computer, and so far it's outlasted both the western digitals I've put in the computer...

I still like western digital though, because they're speedy, quiet, and not too expensive.

Any of the other major makers- Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor/Quantum. Wherever you can get the best deal on the speed/size of drive you want. The newest Seagates are supposedly quieter, and Maxtor appears to have the best rma service. Yeh, I know you're trying to avoid that part....

I seem to end up with WD's, they're usually the best buy whenever I'm in the market. No Probs.

Go with the Maxtor D740X it`s fast ,quiet, and at a very good price,20,40,60,80GB models available,I`m using one at the moment I too was an IBM user.

🙂

ARGH! Its amazing how many ex-IBM harddrive users there are out there. The sole reason I'm visiting General Hardware today is to find a "best Non-IBM HDD". Does anyone know what IBM is doing about this? I had a good friend who had a 75GXP like mine die on him this week.

I should point out my old IBM is still working fine in my old PC ,however with the many RMA reports of the newer IBM drives I decided to go with Maxtor for my new rig and it`s very good .

🙂

WD's, unless they completely turn into crap.

after that, all SCSI drives, as i will not go back to Maxtor ever! :|

Personally I use Maxtor drives. I have used four Maxtor hard drives ranging from 4GB to 80GB and never had a problem. While working I have come across only one bad Maxtor hard drive and many shot WD drives. Maxtor hard drives are also reasonably priced and that is always a plus.
