I need suggestions For a new Athlon XP board.

These are my picks
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400

DFI NFII ULTRA INFINITY nForce2 Ultra 400 w/ IEEE/LAN/audio/SATA

ABIT AN7 nVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400

ABIT NF7-S nVIDIA nForce2

They are all similar in price, and need advice from people that own these boards.

i do plan to overclock a Mobile Athlon in one of these also.

The NF7-S is a much better board for overclocking. It allows multipliers above 12.5 and more voltage selections.

That cheap Shuttle board that everyone loves is supposed to be a great OC'er too.

if you intend to try and get high FSB OCs(220+) then get the DFI. the DFI also offers passive NB cooling so you won't have to change the fan in the future, it also offers an extra two SATA hookups on a new SATA controller over the other two boards.

I don't own any of those boards, but I do think I've heard enough from others to make a statement about them. For FSB OCing, the DFI Infinity can't be beat. If a very high FSB isn't your concern, then the Abit NF7-S would be best. I've heard some people are having dissapointing trouble in trying to overclock with the Asus board. I'm sure it's a good board, but I think the two above are much better. The AN7 I have no idea about.

so does my a7n8x deluxe rev2.0, but i have a special bios running on it😉

I have heard great things about the DFI. I have the lan party rev A and it is a great overclocker. I know a guy who got the infinity and runs his older unlocker 2500+ at 250fsbx10 in synch with his ram. GREAT BOARD!

I have the DFI. I'm running a 2500m@ 2400mhz (200x12). I was running it at 240x10 for a while, seemed pretty stable that way, but I could only get high FSB's by using clockgen. They highest I could boot at was 220x10 for some reason.

Check my signature, DFI. At an earlier point in time the NF7-S was a much better overclocker. The newer ones usually max out at 210-215fsb for some reason. It is still a great board though.

I run my 2500+M @ 2.5GHz (11.5 x 217) on a NF7-S v2. It's 100% stable with Memtest86, Prime95 Torture, and 3D Mark.

Just to let you know, 1 month ago I sold my trusty and reliable MSI-K7N2G to buy the best OCing and Full featured nF2 board available, after reading & reading, and getting suggesions here in the forums too, I realized (along with many others) the best is the Abit NF7-S v2.0, I ordered from newegg.com for 97 buck (tax & shipping included).

The board has a great reputation, You'll find many 3rd party software, Forums, mods...to take out all his juice.

It Seems I'm an Abit-employee:laugh:....But no. just another NF7-S fan!!!

Another vote for the shuttle! YOu cant beat its price/performance.

Check out the Albatron boards for overclocking. They have just about every setting you will need. I just bought this budget $60 one from Newegg last week for my Mobile XP 2600 and I am very happy with it.

Albatron "KX18D Pro" nForce2 Ultra 400

If you need SATA, check out the Albatron "KX18D PROII" nForce2 Ultra 400 for $89.
Anandtech review of this board here:

If you've got voltage hungy RAM (Winbond 😀) and/or double-banked RAM (512Meg sticks), the DFI is particularly useful with its max 3.3v VDimm out of the box and with the new Bios, CPC can be disabled to get double-banked RAM higher (makes a bad performance hit, but the NF2 memory controller seems to have a limitation with double-banked memory depending on chipset yields).

Are you talking about the "uber" bios? Because I tried it and none of the extra voltage settings had any effect aside from the increased memory voltage. I was also still unable to use multipliers above 12.5; they were listed there in the BIOS but if I selected them they chose a very low multiplier instead.

Thanks for all the great replies guys. From all the responses is seems its a race between the DFI and the ABit board. And i'm kinda leaning towards the abit board. Cause I heard the DFI has some clearance issues with HSF. The Socket placement is suppose to be kinda bad on that board, in the upper left corner. DFI has the highest FSB record that is for sure. I only have PC3200 memory, So i'm only gonna be looking at FSB in the 200-220 range. And the only negative I read about the abit board so far is the Active cooling on the Northbridge. Can anyone tell me is that fan very loud?

Jesus. :Q Doesn't DDR run at 2.5v or 2.6v at DDR400?

- M4H

but you need 3.2v+ for bh-5 and bh-6 to really fly (230+ fsb 2,2,2)

I have 2 NF7 v2 (not -S), and one is overclocked with a 2500+M.
I have it running at 2270MHz (133x17!) because my RAM sucks and won't go above PC2100 (damned generic crap 🙁) and my PSU is at its absolute limit, so I can't push any higher, plus my air cooling is loud.
I plan on getting some new RAM (I have 1x256MB PC2700 and 1xPC3500(on RMA), but I want the full GB for UT2k4) and a new PSU, and some watercooling, then pushing it further.

As it is though, it's a damned nice board.
