Best new game?

i can't even remember anything that came out this year that's worth more than $20...

I returned to a lot of the older titles year, mainly titles from 2000-05. Maybe it's just me, but the newer games this year just didn't draw me in that much. The good old strategy or stealth games still get me way more interested.

the fact that empire is second is pretty telling. six months and the best we have is an unplayable strategy game.

Yea there hasn't been any good games released this year at all. Even consoles have been lacking as well. Street Fighter 4 is the only thing that's worth getting.

this is so true. i still find myself playing system shock 2

For 2009? There's literally nothing so far, and 2008 wasn't much better either. There's still five months to go this year, maybe one or two might be decent enough, but overall this year is mediocre if you compare it to 2000 to 2003 especially, with 2005 and 2007 being quite noteworthy as well.

Staring with 2008 and up to this day I would give honorable mentions to:

Fallout 3
Warhammer 40K: Soulstorm
Sins of a Solar Empire
Left 4 Dead
Dead Space
Red Alert 3
STALKER: Clear Sky
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Crysis Warhead

The "best" of that list would be Soulstorm and Fallout 3, for me, that is, of course this list is completely subjective, I know others will disagree, but it's my take on it. And note that I do not believe that any of them hold "best of the year" quality content, they're simply decent games with which you can have fun for some time, but going back and play them again constantly? Not really.

eh... i shockingly liked prototype. even though the story is lame it's just engrossing enough.

i want to see a nice adult story line that doesn't just drop f bombs every 3 seconds to be considered "mature".

most of the good games are coming out in the Fall...Modern Warfare 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat, Bioshock 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Dirt 2

If you haven't tried Zeno Clash, get on Steam and download the demo. Really fun.

Trine is also quite fun. It's a little expensive at $30, but if its your sort of thing you might be willing to pay that. Also a fun game.

It's unfortunate that Empire Total War turned out to be bug ridden, but I would name it the game of the year so far. As others mentioned, the ones coming out in the fall will likely take the crown.

Every single one of those is a sequel or "next in line". I'd love to see something "new". But, I guess you have to stick with what works.

Majesty 2 may be the last PC game I pay full price for in the forseeable future, and that's only because I enjoyed the original so much. I'm not even sure I'm going to do that.

Like some others, I'm heading back to older games. X2 has been commanding all of my gaming time the past 2 weeks; I almost couldn't believe it when I saw it was released in early 2003. I've owned this game without getting into it for over SIX years? Time does fly.

I'd say Mirror's Edge, but that's a port of a 2008 game.

The new game I've spent the most time on would be Demigod, it's decent fun and the connections problems have all been ironed out since 1.01.

Eve Apocrypha is my favorite game released this year thus far.

I expect Elemental to be my favorite game to be released this year by the time next year rolls around, but it may not even get released this year. It is the most anticipated game I want this year, although I would like to play Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3 as well.
