Best Nero tip IMO! : Displaying the real burning-speed in Nero

I've been passing this hack out to my Nero-using friends for a few weeks now. This is neat because it lets you see when Nero is speed-capping a burn. Tell Nero to burn at 40x and it says it does, but is actually maxxed out at 24x because of Smart-Burn (or whatever limits the speed in Nero). You used to have to calculate the actual burn speed by using the burn time after the burn was completed. With this hack you get a real-time readout. Tres coole.

Actually Nero is not speed capping you.

Most high speed drives are Zone CLV. This means the disc is broken into zones, starting from the first zone the speed is ramped up in small jumps. Most 32x and 40x drives will start at 24x and slowly work their way up to 32x or 40x as they near the outter edge of the disc. If you never burn a full CD you may never reach the max speed.

If SmartBurn is enabled, what speed the drive determines safe will be shown as the MAX speed you can select in Nero. If Nero is always showing the max speed or your CD-RW SmartBurn is ethier disabled or has determined the media you are using can work reliably up to that speed.

Maybe its this "SmartBurn" thats screwing up my burns because it thinks it can only burn at 2X to 32x CD on my 16X writer. I hate it when programs do me favors. How the hell do I turn it off?

I exported my Recorded key and stripped out all of the other stuff leaving this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder]

"ShowSingleRecorderSpeed"=dword:00000001

You SHOULD (correct me if I'm wrong!) be able to copy those lines into a Notepad file and save them with a .reg extension. Right-click, select "Merge" and there you have it.

WARNING!!! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU POOCH YOUR SYSTEM DOING THIS!!!! Proceed at your own risk!!!! (I had the key, so your mileage may vary.)

does this reg file work?

Like I said, I had the key already and just needed to change the 0 to 1. I couldn't export just that value, so I deleted the other 20+ lines and left what I posted.

BTW: It works for me. I wonder why they disabled it, considering how much control Nero gives you to change setttings, it's odd that they hid this.
