I don't want an Ipod simply because everyone has one, it has no tuner, and it doesn't appear as a native USB device. Anyone got any suggestions? I know not many devices besides the Nano have 5 gigs+ in solid state.. but I haven't really shopped around yet, any suggestions are appreciated.

Flash based 5gb or more will be pretty hard to find. 4gb is pretty much the most you will find in a flash based player.

Look at:
iRiver H10 - 5gb HD
Creatives Micro and MicroPhoto - 6/8gb HD

The Sony Bean is really tiny, has an FM tuner, has software that'll let you just drag/drop stuff into it, has a built-in rechargable battery, and has a USB plug that pops right out of it ... but it's only 1 GB.

I found a creative zen, that was 1 gig also, and I think it was less. Trying to get under $100, even if I can only get 1 gig.

Sandisk is getting ready to release a new Sansa line in a month or two. It will offer a color LCD, a MicroSD/TF slot for memory expansion, FM tuner, mass storage compliant and has a top capacity of 6gb FLASH.

It won't be cheap but I have one of the current gen Sansas (512mb + 1gb SD onboard) and it's a great little unit for the $ once you load the newest firmware on it.

I just got a Creative Vision:M and it has a built in tuner, is 30gb(has a HD, sorry), a built in FM tuner (which can record FM transmitions), a voice recorder, and plays movies on its very nice 2.5" color screen, which has 200,000 more colors then the new iPods. The sounds quility is also better then that of the iPods.

Apparently Samsung sold flash memory chips to Apple at below-market prices, that might be a possible reason we don't see any other large flash based mp3 players.

there is one version of the zen micro in black that has 5gb of flash memory. you will know its that one because in the package there is no ac charger, just earbuds and usb cable. research it, i think its rare, but it can be found. my local bestbuy had a few, and nobody wanted them cause they had no chargers.. :) :) :) isnt that funny.

Iaudio has a 4gb flash player. not sure if it's available in the US yet though. I have the 1gb and it's great. drag, drop, go no software needed.

I Think samsung also has a 4GB planned.. nope no 4GB. i was referring to model YP-T8A. really nice, but a bit expensive, only 2GB and not widely available here.

Hate to burst your bubble here but...
iPod only has 65k colors: From Apple's website "2.5 inch (diagonal) QVGA transflective, over 65,000-color liquid crystal display with white LED backlight"

Creative has consistantly had better sound then iPod. Yes I have heard the 5th gen because my roommate has one. Stock earbuds? Please...I listened to both players on a NAD sound system with Polk LSi 25 speakers. Don't talk to me about sound. I've worked in a sound studio in Memphis. Sun Studios...ever heard of it, I doubt it? I suggest you look it up. I pride myself on my sound equipment.

Don't go shooting your mouth off because you think you know more when you don't even know the specs of what you speak.

Sorry to say it like that but I hate it when people mislead others.

On a side note, I bought my MP3 player 2 days ago. I did plently of reserach and found what was best. Why would I spend more then the cost of an iPod if I didn't think it was worth it.

ok mr. know it all.

my bubble is bursted, about the video. oh my. how often do you watch videos on a portable device number one, and I will give you my house if you can tell the difference between 65k and 262k on a 2.5 inch screen. nonetheless I was wrong.

about the audio. if you really know all you claim to know, you would know that both creative and apple use the same audio decoding and driving chip made by Wolfson. The ipod one has been optimized to give more battery life. as a matter of fact i owned a 20GB zen, and then switched to a 60gb ipod video, and I can assure you that the ipod has far better sound at high volumes. the distortion level is quite better on apples product. so just because u listen to the devices with a pre amp low volume feed to your massive 2000 watt sound system doesnt make on device better. these are portable devices, and they must perform better when they are alone with a pair of headphones.
and dont talk to me about stock earphones. I use shure e3c on both players, and apple's definetely sounds better. only way to improve creative's is to turn on eax. and as you should know that kills battery life.

right?
or do I need to work in memphis to be right?

Where did you get the info that the Vision:M uses the Wolfson audio decoder? I'd like a link please.

Vision:M has a new generation of internals. How could you postulate this from on old model to a new one? It is like comparing what a new iPod sounds like having only heard an old one.

the distortion level is quite better on apples product.

I'm not sure where you are getting this either.

so just because u listen to the devices with a pre amp low volume feed to your massive 2000 watt sound system doesnt make on device better.

It is 85watts. At both high and low volumes it performs very well and I have listened to it on very nice headphones.

these are portable devices, and they must perform better when they are alone with a pair of headphones.

Agreed

and dont talk to me about stock earphones.

I didn't talk about stock earphones, you did. I was retorting to the fact you accused me of listening in that way.

I use shure e3c on both players, and apple's definetely sounds better.

How could you know they sound better if you only listened to an earlier generation of creative player?

only way to improve creative's is to turn on eax. and as you should know that kills battery life.

The Vision:M does not have EAX, it was removed from their players.

No.

or do I need to work in memphis to be right?

I would never want anyone to have to work in memphis. It isn't the best of cities.

words ... words ...

Isn't this an irrelevant rant? The iPod doesn't have a tuner, so it's certainly not the best MP3 player with a tuner.

If you look around the net, you'll see pictures comparing the screens of the two, and the Vision:M totally destroys the iPod. You can just drop full-res DivX and XviD movies into it or about any other video file. It has a 5-band custom EQ. It has a more powerful amp (apparently 25mW/channel). A lot of people say the Vision:M has better sound quality, but I haven't seen anything legitimate to prove that except the amp. Still, most of your sound quality comes from having quality headphones, and the Vision:M can drive better headphones. And you don't have to hang around an audiophile very long to hear a million times that no matter how bad or good your headphones/speakers are, they'll be better with a better amp.

The iPod has better battery life, and it's cheaper, it's a little smaller, and it supports lossless audio, and it works with more than just WinXP.

best product at CES, that's sayin something.

Well it does convey just how much this year's CES was lacking in any cool and revolutionary products since they gave the award to a blantant 5G iPod rip off.
