Hey gang, im just getting into the mp3 encoding game and would like some info/feedback on what some of you think is the best encoder at 192kb/s. Or even 256kb/s, which are the 2 bitrates i intend to encode/experiment at.

As i understand it, there is quite a wide and varying array of encoding algorithms to choose from (xing, LAME, FHG, etc). I just need some suggestions on what programs or methods produce the best sounding results.

Any and all feedback is welcomed :)

I will add to the vote for LAME, that the developers are heavily working on it, improving it all the time. Whereas, the other codecs are pretty much dorment. The best quality you can get out of LAME (or the MP3 format altogether for that matter), is by using it with the --alt-preset switches. Run LAME with the command line --alt-preset help, and you will get all the info you need about these presets. For 192Kbps, use --alt-preset cbr 192. And likewise, use --alt-preset cbr 256 for 256Kbps.

Anything with Lame engine. IIRC, Lame is a command line operated engine.

Easy CD-DA EXtractor is a good easy to use program using Lame engine.
