Nerd edition, so no Godfather II.

For me, it was Aliens. So beautifully done and still holds up today.

Terminator 2 gets my vote. Dark Knight is a close second though, but I enjoyed the origin story in Batman Begins so I really enjoyed them both a lot. T2 was just incredible at the time and came out a lot farther after T1 did and the special effects/acting are a lot better in it which make it that much more enjoyable.

As much as I'd love to do Aliens or Star Wars, if you're looking at it both from a nerd perspective AND a general "great movie sequel" perspective, nothing beats T2 as the all-time greatest sequel. It's one of those very rare movies where the sequel wasn't just better than the first movie, but MUCH better than the first movie, and where the first movie was also a lot of fun.

Personal vote is Aliens, it's basically perfect, impossible to improve.

I can see arguments for T2 however. As much as I love BTTF, I think the first was better.

No Iron Eagle 2 or Karate Kid 2?

KK2? He might be the ONLY main character in the movie history that did not improve his skill set in sequel. He basically did nothing in that movie and the last fight was as cheesy as Big Trouble in Little China.

Empire is the clear and only winner.

Aliens and T2 were great movies on their own, but very, very different types of movies from their predecessors. The thing is that both of those original flicks are also completely great on their own, today. whereas Star Wars episode IV really is just a shitty, shitty movie, no matter how much I or any other fan still love it...it's just a godawful piece of crap. This greatly enhances how phenomenal Empire is in comparison.

It is improved by just watching Alien. :D Aliens is fun and all, but it's a far dumber, less entertaining sequel than T2 was for its predecessor.

Oh, to be clear, Aliens is a completely different movie from Alien, but it stands on it's own feet better than most sequels, T2 included imo.

The way you view Aliens (it being far dumber and less entertaining) is how I view T2. I guess we disagree on that point.

However, I'll end the debate with which was the better movie with two words: Edward Furlong.

yeah, he was terrible. But the issue with your next post is that no: Alien and Terminator were superior to their sequels. Hi-Yo! :D

I think the below are all sequels which were better than the 1st movie

Lethal Weapon 2
Superman 2
Hellboy 2
Beverly Hills Cop 2

Empire Strikes Back
Aliens
Terminator 2
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The Dark Knight

In that order. Never saw Electric Bugaboo and not thinking I missed much.

Of those listed, I'd say Terminator 2. I've never seen Aliens or Breakin 2. Star Wars V was the best of the series, but I'm not really a big Star Wars fan.
