Best movie of the year: John Wick

I saw every Oscar contender other than Nightcrawler, nothing stirred the soul or entertained better. And Keanu's performance was flawless.

Name your unpretentious pick for the year. I loved Book of Life and was bored to tears by Boyhood, Inherent Vice, thought Into the Woods was laughably bad in execution.. Wes Anderson should get some props, he's less "white people stories" after Darjeeling, Grand Budapest had it's charms.

No, Leviathan is the best I've seen this year. Nightcrawler was awesome, so was Birdman and Foxcatcher. Very disappointing that Gyllenhaal did not get nominated for best actor this morning; dude was amazing. Hoping to see Inherent Vice this weekend and Winter Sleep next Wednesday. Boyhood was freaking awful.

Best action movie for me was Edge of Tomorrow; loved it. Best stupid movies for me were Snowpiercer, The Equalizer, and 300 part deux.

I made a list if anyone wants to see recommendations for other stuff: http://letterboxd.com/keithtalent/list/my-best-of-2014-so-far/

I'll check out Leviathan. Birdman was a $2 script dressed up with great tech specs and acting. Actually didnt see foxcatcher.

Hmm, Snowpiercer was sorta a let down in the end but a great first american movie for a korean director. I hated the equalizer, something cruel and joyless about it. And, dude, hookers get smacked around, it's part of the business arrangement as a ho - it's weird that he first befriended one, then went postal when she was smacked around. that's what happens! That's one of the reasons a job in retail's a bit better!

They were friends! It was like Pretty Woman, but with even less kissing and a lot more killing. I thought the Birdman script was very sharp; some great dialogue there.

I have a feeling pretty much everyone here will hate Foxcatcher...

Joke thread ? John Wick was fail. No depth to it for the most part, just empty action entertainment.

many movies that are awesome have no depth and are empty action movies.

commando
predator
expendables
bloodsport
lionheart
rambo

i could go on, but there are too many to list.

I enjoyed Nightcrawler. Similar to Leo Dicarprio, I didn't care for Jake Gyllenhal (sp) initially.

Then he showed a pretty good versatility and is a damn good actor. Nightcrawler, Source Code, and Prisoners. Check all of them out.

He's done a good job since as a teen in Donnie Darko.

I really enjoyed Snowpiercer, I never watched it in the Movie theater because the trailer made the movie look stupid. but I saw it at home and was surprised, It was like watching a Terry Gilliam movie.

Rofl at saying John Wick was a fail movie. I loved it for what it was, all those head shots. Great action flick, I'll probably buy it once it is out.

I HAVE to catch Nightcrawler.

Birdman was good but not best movie of the year. American Sniper was a huge let down for me. Bradley Cooper was awesome direction was poor.

John Wick was amazing. Just a fun movie to watch. I compare it to taken 1.

I agree with ZeZe Prisoners is really good. Def a sleeper.

Guardians or Fury is my favorite movie of the year. Fury taking a hefty lead in my mind. Guardians just surprised me so much. Did not think anything would top Cap 2 in comic books movies.

wick had some of the slickest close range gunplay since Equilibrium (which if you haven't seen, is also worth checking out).

I haven't seen Expendables, but all of the other movies had a ton of suspense. John Wick doesn't come close to any of them.

a) The protagonist is a former hitman, the worst of the worst apparently. Why would anyone care about his safety or desire for revenge?

b) His puppy was killed and his car was stolen by a spoiled little pussy of a bad guy. Does anyone really care enough to "root" for this guy to be killed. Was this pussy the antagonist or was the father? They were both no match for John Wick, and I didn't care if any of them lived or died.

c) The only somewhat suspenseful scene would have been the hitwoman stalking him, who was 50 feet from him without him knowing she was around, but she decided it was more important to leave and be killed by the hotel owner. 😕

There was no character to root for, no suspense, no plot twists that weren't dead obvious, no sub plots, no climax, no love interests, and the entire theme of revenge that was supposed to carry the entire movie was as weak of a reason to have mediocre violence as I have ever seen. I never once cared if any of characters lived or died, other than wishing John Wick would be killed about 20 minutes in so the movie could end.

Most boring action movie I've seen in ages.

Keanu needs to stop doing movies. He is as bad now as that guy in face off (not travolta).

Edge tomorrow was good.

neither commando or lionheart would be considered awesome. which one is Rambo? There is no movie called "Rambo" (and I loved commando when I was 6...I was 6)

Predator and Bloodsport were freaking awesome, though!
