On The Waterfront (1954). The best movie ever made.
"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley."
Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy to Charley Malloy (Rod Steiger)

I'd vote for The Godfather (I & II) and Shawshank.

Citizen Kane doesn't do much for me. It drags too much; although for its time it is very good, there's been better though since then imo.

Lord of the Rings obviously 😛

I believe it's impossible for a movie in my lifetime to surpass these. Everything else is going to seem "meh" from now on.

most groundbreaking movie in any case

i can name at least 20 - 30 films that have been inspired by it

While whether one likes some filme or not is not up to discussion, - one just does or does not, and tastes do differ, - but, as far as "groundbreaking", - pu-leaze! it is very derivative and very unoriginal. As a matter of fact, - I can not think of a single thing that was unique and original, - in or about this movie, - be that plot or technology related (even "bullet" time at the time was already a used-before technology (Gap commercials, a year or so before))

The reason that you have better since Citizen Kane is because it was the first of it's kind. 🙂

Which is also why it's number 1 on most film critics and the AFI Top 100 movie list.

It's between Citizen Kane and the Matrix
two different kind of movies though ... so I'll say that they're both the best in their own category

Yea, I mean its a good movie and you can really see in the cinematography/sets/effects that is truly a film on a grand scale; a very important film no doubt; just saying it didn't do much for me. Dragged in the middle/end too much.

Epic? Far from it IMO. I watched it about 10 years ago, some hispanic prison gangster movie right? wasn't too impressed with it.
