I think it really depends on your mouse and use style. I use an older pad, I believe made by Razer which is a thin textured hard plastic surface which was optimized for laser/optical mice to be able to discern movement with an extremely thin rubber back to prevent it from moving on the surface.

steelseries dex - it's a hybrid pad. I've tried hard plastic and regular cloth pads and this is the best of both worlds.

I like this one. My keyboard sits on it too. I know my mouse will never run out of real estate, so I never have to consider that I might be getting close to the edge of the pad (not that that is a situation that comes up frequently anyway). It seems sturdy enough, and even provides a small amount of wrist padding/support when using the mouse. I got it on sale a while back for $14.99.

Razer Sphenx.

The QcK+ is widely reputed to be the best cloth pad available. OR, you can buy the same exact thing, in any shape and size, non-brand, off of Amazon.

Mine is the Silent Monsters XXXL. Just as good as the qck and far cheaper.
(I mostly play quakelive and reflex, and FPS in general)
