Func archetype 1030 is one of the best out there. Ratpadz are horrible IMO. There's a ton of mousepads out there like steelpad, razer, etc. All of them are pretty good. You'll see a difference in your precision. I used to play w/ on just the desk and while it was okay a good mousepad is a LOT better.
Yeah I had a Ratpadz and didn't like it much. Too noisy. My friend has a 1030 and loves it to death, he has spares in fact. From personal experience, get an Xtrac pad if you are using an LED mouse:

They come in cloth or plastic. If you use a Laser mouse, get an Icemat v2:

My previous LED mice such as the MX510 and MX518 responded very well to the speckled design on the Xtrac pads, however the laser mice I've used (MX1000, Razer Copperhead, Logitech VX Revolution) don't like them very much (skitterish). I just got an Icemat v2 and it works GREAT with laser mice. If you want the most accuracy, you need to use a wired mouse. If you prefer a palm mouse, I'd recommend a Logitech MX510 or MX518; if you like fingertip mice I would recommend a Razer Copperhead. If you do choose to go wired, I would also suggest picking up a mouse bungee, it gets rid of the hassle of having a wire:

I spend a good amount each year on input devices because I do a lot of precision graphics type of stuff. I just started using the Copperhead & Icemat combination and it's really nice. If you really want to go wireless, the Logitech VX Revolution notebook mouse and an Icemat are also an excellent combination.
